#911 Lose Your Temper, Ballerina Hairspray Evacuation, Nepalese Curry

Show 911 Tuesday 9 December
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a scene from the movie Home Alone.

In this scene a young boy called Kevin is talking to an old man. And the old man is explaining why he doesn’t talk to his son anymore. And he explains that many years ago they had an argument.

He says: We lost our tempers and I said I didn't care to see him anymore. He said the same and we haven't spoken to each other since.

Lose your temper is an idiom which means to fail to control your anger.

The man also says: I’m afraid if I call him, he won’t talk to me.
And Kevin says: No offence, but, aren’t you a little old to be afraid?

No offence is also an idiom.

used to say that you do not mean to upset or insult sb by sth you say or do

Kevin’s saying it because it’s kind of rude to say that somebody’s old.

And the example here is: No offence, but I’d really like to be on my own.

Incidentally, some people use this idiom in quite a strange way. They use it before saying something that’s clearly offensive and they think they can get away with it by saying no offence at the start. Very odd.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today furious hairspraying by young ballerinas caused a mass evacuation at a theatre in New Zealand.

Students of the Maureen Ax School of Dance in Palmerston North were putting on a production of Sleeping Beauty when a when a cloud of hairspray set off a smoke alarm.
According to news reports around 1500 people had to leave the building – including about 200 dancers.
Maureen said the kids had been getting ready for the next act. They’d had their hair down for the previous dance ... so they had been furiously spraying their hair to get it back into the right place.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 9th of December.
Kia Ora.

TDES Niseko Snow Report
at Niseko Yurt Village

with Sanjay Thapa
head chef, Bhozan

What’s your job this winter?
I’m the chef so I’m running a Nepalese restaurant, called Bhozan.

What does Bhozan mean?
Bhozan means in Nepal is like delicious food.

What kind of food do you cook?
Ah, especially Nepalese curry.

How is Nepalese curry different from Indian curry?
Indian have a lot of spicy, like they put everything and a little bit oily. But Nepalese is like we just put some spicy and, ah, try to less oily.

How many years has Bhozan been in Niseko?
Ah, almost four years.

Is it a big job setting up the restaurant?
Every year set up is big job.

When are you going to open?
Ah, probably this month, around 20th.

When is usually the busiest time?
Ah, start from, ah, Christmas.

Was it difficult to put up these yurts?
Yes, we have to from … start from base and everything. All the balance because it’s very delicate, like all the pole is pointing.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is argument.
a heated exchange of diverging or opposite views

Heated means full of anger or excitement.

So if you’re calmly disagreeing with someone, then it’s not an argument, it’s just a conversation.

I think Home Alone was a good movie. Really? I didn’t think it very good.

But if you get angry or excited, then it can turn into an argument.

What are you talking about? Home Alone was crap! It wasn’t crap. It was good. It was funny. Funny?! More like cheesy as hell and the acting was atrocious. You have no taste.

Old Man Marley He's grown up. We lost our tempers and I said I didn't care to see him anymore. He said the same and we haven't spoken to each other since.

Kevin If you miss him, why don't you call him?

Old Man Marley I'm afraid if I call him, he won't talk to me.

Kevin How do you know?

Old Man Marley I don't know. I'm just afraid he won't.

Kevin No offense, but, aren't you a little old to be afraid.

Old Man Marley You can be a little old for a lot of things. You're never too old to be afraid.
