#908 Potato Stamp Christmas Cards

Show 908 Saturday 6 December
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

I decided to make some Christmas cards with a potato stamp.

First I made a stamp out of a potato.

I made a Christmas tree stamp.

I was planning to use this red stamp pad. But it didn’t really work.
Luckily I found some paint. There was nothing in the red tube, so I used green instead.

Then I folded some paper and stamped six trees on each sheet of paper.

When the trees were dry, I drew a picture inside the card and wrote a message.

I coloured the hat and the sign and did the final folding.

Lovely.

#907 Chicks Dig It, Y’all, Powderlife Café, Kutchannel

Show 907 Friday 5 December
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

In the snow report today we talk to Nick who is the manager of Powderlife Café – which is a café up in the ski village with really comfy couches. We had a coffee there the other day and it was very tasty - they roast their own beans too and Nick took us out the back and showed us their roaster which was a very cute little machine.

Today we’re studying a song called Chicks Dig It.

Chick is an informal word for a girl or a woman. I normally find this word quite offensive, but I think it works well in this song.
Dig is an informal word which means to like something.

I stumbled across this song a couple of weeks ago and I really like it.
The guy is making kind of fun of himself for doing silly things just to impress girls – but he’s also celebrating that as one of the joys of life.

He sings:
Pain hurts, but only for a minute Yeah life is short so go on and live it

And I think it’s a good song to study because it tells several short stories. The first one is about when he was a kid he dressed up as Superman to impress some girls and he ended up breaking his arm, but it was worth it because one of the girls kissed him.

Daddy's belt, mama's drapes Standing tall on the backyard shed Looking cool in my superman cape I told the neighbourhood girls Said hey y'all watch this My fate was a broken arm And my reward one big kiss When daddy asked me why I did it I made him laugh out loud when I told him 'Cause the chicks dig it

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today a doctor saved a boy’s life by performing surgery following instructions sent to him via text message.

David is a British surgeon who does volunteer work for a month a year in Congo. Recently David saw a patient whose arms had been ripped off. David said he realized that the only way to save the boy’s life was to do an amputation. David is a vascular surgeon and he’d never done an operation like this before. So he sent a cell phone message to a colleague back home to ask him how to do it. He got a reply almost immediately. He followed the ten steps in the message and the boy survived.

And that was Stick News for Friday the 5th of December.
Kia Ora.

TDES Niseko Snow Report
at Powderlife Cafe
with Nick, head roaster and manager

Where are you from?
I’m from Masterton, New Zealand. And I lived in Australia for about 11 or 12 years, on the Sunshine Coast.

How long have you been in Niseko?
I’ve been here since April this year, the start of this year, 2008.

Why did you come here?
Um, my uncle actually has a business here. So, um, I thought it would be a good opportunity to come to Japan, learn some Japanese, make some coffee.

Have you been up the mountain yet?
I have, I have. It’s my first season snowboarding cos I’m a, I’m a surfer. So ah, yeah, my first season, I’m doing OK. I’ve been up three days this year, so far, so…

Word of the Day

Today’s word is y’all.
Y’all is short for you all.

In my dictionary it says: used especially in the southern US to mean you when talking to more than one person.

In the song he says: hey y'all watch this
In that situation you could also say: hey you guys watch this

friday joke

Teacher: Tom, what is the past participle of the verb to ring?
Tom: What do you think it is, Ms Smith?
Teacher: I don't think, I know.
Tom: I don't think I know either, Ms Smith!

conversations with sarah
#565 I bought a newspaper yesterday.

Step 1: Repeat Brian’s lines.
Step 2: Read Brian’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Sarah Check it out - I bought a newspaper yesterday.

Brian A newspaper! Wow, I haven’t seen one of those for ages.

Sarah Yeah, I was surprised to find they still print them.

Brian Why did you buy it?

Sarah Oh, I heard that there was going to be an article about Kutchannel in it … so I thought I’d check it out.

Brian What’s Kutchannel?

Sarah It’s a website about Kutchan – the guy who runs it was a guest on The Daily English Show … actually the guy who wrote the article was also a guest on The Daily English Show. And I know one of the girls in this picture.

Brian It’s a small world.

Sarah Yeah, well this is a small town.

Chicks Dig It

by Chris Cagle

Hey y'all.. watch this
Daddy's belt, momma's drapes
Standing tall on the backyard shed
Looking cool in my Superman cape
I told the neighbourhood girls
Say hey y'all watch this
My fate was a broken arm
My reward one big kiss
When daddy asked me why I did it
I made him laugh out loud when I told him
'Cause the chicks dig it

Scars heal, glory fades
And all we're left with are the memories made
Pain hurts, but only for a minute
Yeah life is short so go on and live it
'Cause the chicks dig it

Black top road
Learner permit
Thought I was Earnhardt
Drivin' fast but I didn't see the ditch
Took out a mailbox, then a fence and then a barn
The police came and called my father
But I met the farmer's daughter
And when the judge asked me why I did it
He threw the book at me when I told him
"'Cause the chicks dig it"

Scars heal, glory fades
And all we're left with are the memories made
Pain hurts, but only for a minute
Yeah life is short so go on and live it
'Cause the chicks dig it

Just throw caution to the wind my friend
Then sit back and watch your life begin, ' cause

Scars heal, glory fades
And all we're left with are the memories made
Pain hurts, but only for a minute
Yeah life is short so go on and live it
'Cause the chicks dig it

Scars heal, glory fades
And all we're left with are the memories made
Pain hurts, but only for a minute
Yeah life is short so go on and live it
It don't matter if you lose or if you win it
Hey the chicks dig it
The chicks dig it
The chicks dig it
The chicks dig it
