#1257 How Māui Slowed The Sun, Fat Vs Obese, Ostentatious Coffee, Fave OF Character

Show 1257 Thursday 29 July
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

It’s Māori Language Week in New Zealand this week.

So today we’re studying a video in Māori with English subtitles.

It’s a video of a story called: How Māui slowed the Sun.

This video’s based on a book that I had when I was a child. So it really brings back memories for me. And I really like these illustrations.

The story’s a New Zealand legend and I think it’s also told in other Polynesian countries too. Basically the sun was moving across the sky too fast, so a guy called Māui decided he’d try to slow it down.

This is a story that a lot of kids in New Zealand know and they read it at school, so you can see on YouTube there are a lot of videos of the story made by kids. They’re animations or acted out. Some of them are pretty cute.

Today’s question answer will test you on the story, so you might want to go and watch the video before you try and answer the questions.

Also today, we are introducing a new segment on the show. It’s called question time.

For question time this week we asked people about Outrageous Fortune. Outrageous Fortune’s a New Zealand TV show and I was surprised to find that not everyone is as obsessed with it as I am.

STICK NEWS

Anne Milton is a member of the conservative party of the United Kingdom. She’s currently the public health minister.
According to news reports she said doctors and other health professionals should tell people they are fat rather than obese.
She says people should take personal responsibility for their lifestyles and using the word fat could encourage people to lose weight.

And that was Stick News for Thursday the 29th of July.
Kia ora.

Look at these stats... there are too many fat people in Britatin!
Gasp! You said the F word!

1257 b
According to these test results... you're fat.
! Really?! gasp!

1257 c
The government is calling on all lardarses in Britain to refrain from scoffing pies.
That might be a bit much...

Word of the Day

Today’s word is ostentation.

The other day I bought some coffee for the first time from this company called Karajoz - if that’s how you say it - and on the back of the packet it says the nose knows, which is quite cute. And it also says the coffee is 100% free of ostentation.

So what is ostentation? Is it a dangerous chemical or something? Actually, no. They’re just trying to be clever.

Ostentation means: an exaggerated display of wealth, knowledge or skill that is made in order to impress people.

So I think they mean something like: this coffee isn’t just trying to show off and impress people … it genuinely is good coffee.

question time

Papakura, Auckland, New Zealand

Welcome to the first question time on The Daily English Show.
For question time today talked to people in Papakura in Auckland.
We asked them: What’s your favourite character on Outrageous Fortune?

Probably Van.
Why?
‘Cos he’s the craziest. And he always does silly stuff and makes you laugh.

Ah, I don’t really watch it, so I wouldn’t really know. But Pascalle, she’s pretty cool.
She’s different and kind of out there and stuff, so, yeah.

Um, oh, I don’t really watch it. But, I don’t know, it’s probably that, ah, that main guy that got in jail.

What was her name? Rebecca, eh?
Cheryl.
Cheryl, yeah.
What do you like about her?
Oh, she’s a good actor.

I quite like Grandpa. (?)
Why do you like him?
Cos he’s pretty rough.
Cool.
And he’s a bit of a sexual deviant.
That he is.
And I like his tracksuit.

Cheryl’s my favourite.
Yeah? What do you like about her?
I don’t know. She’s like funny and, like, she doesn’t care what anyone thinks about her, so, yeah, she’s pretty cool.

conversations with sarah
#803 How is it violent?

Step 1: Repeat Robert’s lines.
Step 2: Read Robert’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Sarah The story’s much more violent than I remembered it.

Robert How is it violent?

Sarah He beats the sun up.

Robert Yeah, but the sun deserved it. He was moving too fast.

Sarah Nobody deserves to be beaten!

Robert What would you have done?

Sarah I would’ve scheduled a meeting with the sun and, ah, tried to negotiate a solution that suited everybody.

Robert What if the sun didn’t want to come to the meeting?

Sarah Hmmm … well …
