Everyone gathered for some instructions before the race.
And I told you, on that email, I said it’s al … the sun’s always shining and the birds are always chirping. And I wasn’t lying. Big yellow’s out and he’s spying on us today. So it’s a pretty awesome way to start the series out here.
Dan’s out here from, ah, Innov-8. If you guys don’t have any off-road shoes and you’re tackling this, ah, course today, you’re going to have a lot of fun out there. Ah, a couple of tracks are pretty, pretty grim, pretty slippery, so I’m pretty sure when you come back you’ll probably be paying him a visit. Specially cause we’re at Riverhead next, and that gets grubby as anything.
All I’m going to say about this long and super long course is save some for the second half. First half is pretty friendly, pretty nice. Second half is absolutely brutal.
There were 4 courses: short, mid, long and super long.
The athletes had to walk through some chemicals in their running shoes to help protect the forests from some kind of disease.
The first race to start was the long and super long courses. A bit later the mid course started, and then the short course.
Dan continued selling shoes before during and after the race.
During the race it started raining quite heavily, so we watched people finishing from under the tent. Luckily the rain stopped after a while, so we could get a bit closer to the finish line.
This is Reece, the guy who came first in the mid course.
Lots of people had a massage after the race. It seemed like the perfect way to end the day.
language notes
big yellow = the sun

I heard there was going to be a free concert by the Sky Tower, so we went down to check it out.
I think it was organized by a radio station called ZM and there were a couple of guys walking around taking photos of people in a frame which said ZM Listeners Are Better Looking.
And someone from the station gave out some free tickets to an event.
A guy called Dane Rumble was performing. He arrived on stage by jumping from the Sky Tower which was pretty cool.
Dane Rumble reminded me a bit of Vanilla Ice, except he wasn’t rapping.
We listened for a while and then went up the tower where we had a bird’s-eye view of the concert.

Show 1188 Saturday 6 March Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.
On Wednesday night I went to see a movie in a park in Auckland called Grey Lynn Park. It was part of a series of free events put on by the Auckland City Council called Movies In Parks.
We arrived before 7 because we thought it was staring at 7. But the movie didn’t actually start until after 8.
Lots of people had bought picnics with them as well as chairs, bean bags, blankets and cushions.
The screen was really cool. I’ve never seen anything like it before.
The film started just as the sun was setting. And by the time it finished it was completely dark.
The movie we watched was called Goodbye Pork Pie. It’s a New Zealand film that came out in 1981. I’d never seen it before and I loved it. It was so funny.

It was a really hot sunny day and there were quite a few people there.
There was coffee for sale, but people seemed to be more interested in other beverages.
I saw kids on bikes and scooters and other kids shooting hoops, a guy flying a kite, police officers.
A band called The Datsuns was playing. I'd never heard of them ... but they seemed to be pretty popular.
They didn't really look like daytime people and they said as much.
You know I felt pretty apprehensive about playing during the day. It always feels kind of like out of our element. But, ah, I have thrust that aside and, ah, we shall go on.
I thought the stage was pretty cool - it folded out from a truck.
There were signs by the stage saying: Auckland City Council, putting it on for you.
It reminded me of the campaign we saw at an event two weeks ago: Get It On.
But they weren't talking about the same thing, of course.

We’ve got guys saying they don’t mind paying their rates now they’re getting free breakfast from the city. So enjoy yourselves, we’ll have spot prizes in a minute. And of course we’ve got a bike to give away later in the morning.
We’re just doing a bit of filming, behind, as you can see there.
A bit of crossing to Breakfast.
A bit of, yeah, weather crossing into Breakfast, yeah.
Great, well enjoy that, we’ll keep quiet while you do it.
Thanks, man.
We’re coming here live this morning from the Go By Bike Breakfast down here at Auckland’s Viaduct. If you’ve just woken up and you have got a bike outside, take that to work, leave the car at home. You’re being encouraged to, along with thousands of other Kiwis today, ah, the ladies behind me will be, ah, testament to the fact that you can ride and have fun as well.
Good to see you all here. Hope you’re having a great breakfast. And I hope you’re staying safe.
Running red lights is for the mugs. Please don’t do it and please encourage your friends not to do it. I don’t lecture you because you do it, I only tell you because you’re part of the cycling fraternity. And when you’re at a red light and stop and wait and are law-abiding, then those delinquents that are coming through can clearly see that you are role model leaders in the biking fraternity. So thank you for that.
(John Banks)
And the mayor even made a promise.
And next year … let me make a promise … unless it’s very, very wet, I’ll rock up on the bike.
Part of the event was a commuter challenge.
This year the, the contestants in it are, ah, all members of the Ponsonby Premiers Rugby team. So it will be good to see how their big thighs go on those bikes.
Well congratulations, you’re the first commuter in, in the commuter challenge and you’ve beaten the car, so you’ve done very well, give him a round of applause.
So maybe from now on you’ll, you’ll be going by bike?
Um, not too sure about that, aye. Ha ha.
Just say yes.
Yeah, I will, I will.
OK, great, excellent, so yes, we’ve got a positive answer there, that’s great.
And there was another challenge to see who could stand on their pedals for the longest.
All, ah, chrome lugs and everything. I’m just admiring his gear, not admiring his rear, although he is presenting, ah, quite a good view for John and I.
Yeah, but still he’s stopped at the red, that’s more important.

I normally swim in the ocean. The water in the lake is warmer and there's no jellyfish and the water's not salty so even when I swallowed a bit, it wasn't too bad. So the conditions were good.
The last swimmer got cramp, so the reserve took over two minutes before his 30 minutes were up.
After about ten minutes, I got cramp. When I saw the sign for the last ten minutes I thought I would make it. But first I got cramp in my left leg, then in both legs. So I got Keisuke to take over. It was a bit of a bummer.
I only swam for a short time but the water was pretty warm and it felt good.
I only had to swim for two minutes so I swam as fast as I could.
After each swimmer had done a round of thirty minutes, they started from the first person again and did ten minutes each.
During the third ten-minute round, they reached the shore and all the swimmers jumped in and ran towards the finish line.

You’re fighting against the waves, which takes a lot of energy.
Halfway through, I thought about giving up.
There are waves coming on an angle so it pushes you closer to the boat, but you try and keep away from the boat cause you don’t want to go under here and get caught in the propellers.
So, yeah, it’s hard work. Fun, though.
The sun’s out, the wind’s died down, it’s all good. Yeah.
I swam last year as well.
And last year it was really tough.
This time it felt really good.
Yeah, I really enjoyed the swim.

The boats left Hikone Port at about 7 o’clock in the morning and motored out 16 km to the other side of the lake, where the race was starting from.
Hello!
The team we came to see, Little Mermaid, Big LongFeng, took a group photo.
These are the six swimmers, reserve swimmer, camera person, girlfriend.
The swimmers did some stretches and then went for a warm-up swim.
Then the people who were swimming first went to the start line and everyone waited for the race to start.
One minute to go!
Earlier the race had been on the verge of being cancelled because of the rough conditions on the lake but luckily the conditions improved and the race was able
to go ahead.
The first swimmer for Little Mermaid Big LongFeng was Big Kurokawa.
Kurokawa-san, this way!
Each swimmer swam for 30 minutes.
The other team members held up a sign and shouted encouragement, directions
and how much time was left.
Last five minutes!
After 30 minutes, the first swimmer tagged the second swimmer and then climbed back in the boat.
Could you hear what we were calling out when you were swimming?
I couldn't work out exactly what you were saying.
I knew you were calling, "Come here, come here!"
But it felt strange to swim away from the other swimmers.
To be continued …
