#1230 Running In The Hūnua Ranges, Auckland

Show 1230 Saturday 3 July
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

On the 16th of May a friend of ours called Dan came to Auckland to sell some shoes at a running event. We decided to go along and check it out.

The event was held in the Hūnua Ranges which is about a 20 minute drive from Papakura.
It was the first race in a series called the Xterra Auckland trail run series.

Everyone gathered for some instructions before the race.

And I told you, on that email, I said it’s al … the sun’s always shining and the birds are always chirping. And I wasn’t lying. Big yellow’s out and he’s spying on us today. So it’s a pretty awesome way to start the series out here.

Dan’s out here from, ah, Innov-8. If you guys don’t have any off-road shoes and you’re tackling this, ah, course today, you’re going to have a lot of fun out there. Ah, a couple of tracks are pretty, pretty grim, pretty slippery, so I’m pretty sure when you come back you’ll probably be paying him a visit. Specially cause we’re at Riverhead next, and that gets grubby as anything.

All I’m going to say about this long and super long course is save some for the second half. First half is pretty friendly, pretty nice. Second half is absolutely brutal.

There were 4 courses: short, mid, long and super long.

The athletes had to walk through some chemicals in their running shoes to help protect the forests from some kind of disease.

The first race to start was the long and super long courses. A bit later the mid course started, and then the short course.

Dan continued selling shoes before during and after the race.

During the race it started raining quite heavily, so we watched people finishing from under the tent. Luckily the rain stopped after a while, so we could get a bit closer to the finish line.

This is Reece, the guy who came first in the mid course.

Lots of people had a massage after the race. It seemed like the perfect way to end the day.

#1223 Queens Wharf On Anzac Day

Show 1223 Saturday 26 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Queens Wharf is a concrete wharf in Auckland, New Zealand with a few old cargo sheds on it.

Apparently it’s going to be developed and opened in time for the Rugby World Cup next year.

But people have been arguing about exactly what should be done with it. Whether or not the sheds should be pulled down and whether or not they should make a cruise ship terminal.

Anyway, on Anzac Day this year, they opened the wharf to the public, so we decided to go and check it out.

There was a lot going on, like: face painting, balloons, a bouncy castle, a rowing competition, dancing, ball throwing.

There was some kind of rugby mascot hugging kids. And you could pose with a cardboard world cup and team jersey of your choice. I chose Tonga.

The sheds were also open for people to walk through. There wasn’t much going on inside the sheds.

#1209 Dane Rumbe - Sky Tower Concert, Auckland New Zealand

Show 1209 Saturday 27 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

I heard there was going to be a free concert by the Sky Tower, so we went down to check it out.

I think it was organized by a radio station called ZM and there were a couple of guys walking around taking photos of people in a frame which said ZM Listeners Are Better Looking.

And someone from the station gave out some free tickets to an event.

A guy called Dane Rumble was performing. He arrived on stage by jumping from the Sky Tower which was pretty cool.

Dane Rumble reminded me a bit of Vanilla Ice, except he wasn’t rapping.

We listened for a while and then went up the tower where we had a bird’s-eye view of the concert.

#1202 Round The Bays Fun Run Auckland, NZ 2010

Show 1202 Saturday 20 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Last Sunday, the tdes crew ran in a fun run called Round the Bays.
It started at 9:30 in the morning. I think we got there at about 9.
We saw lots of people in groups wearing the same T-shirts and some people wearing costumes.

We tried to walk as close to the starting line as possible, but we didn’t get very far.
There were about 70,000 people there apparently, including the prime minister of New Zealand who, bizarrely, told us to cheer for Lady Gaga.

Come on, Lady Gaga deserves better than that.

There was a countdown to the start of the race.

5,4,3,2,1 … woo-hoo!

Then we stood still for several minutes. And finally, began to shuffle.
Eventually we passed the start line, where the prime minister was blowing kisses to the crowd. Oooook.

About a hundred meters past the start line we could finally start to slowly jog.
It started raining for a bit. But it didn’t last long.
After a few kilometers my face started to look like a tomato as usual. But there were water stations about every kilometer which was nice.

At the finish line they scanned our bibs and gave us a bottle of water.

Good job, mate.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Well done.

Pushchairs and prams to the right or left hand chutes please. Right or left hand chutes.
Leave the middle ones for the runners. And those of you just finishing, well done. The clock shows a time of coming up to one hour and seven minutes.

Then we queued up to get a sticker which showed our time.

66. Well done.
Thank you.
66 minutes.

8.4 kilometers in 66 minutes.
Awesome.

#1195 Bfm Summer Series, Albert Park 2010

Show 1195 Saturday 13 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

On Sunday I went to a free concert at a park in Auckland called Albert Park.

It was put on by a radio station called bFM.

I saw a couple of bands playing: Bang Bang Eche and The Naked and Famous.

There were people selling clothes and food and giving away ice tea.

There was even a bouncy castle. Sadly, it was for kids only.

#1188 Goodbye Pork Pie At Grey Lynn Park

Show 1188 Saturday 6 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

On Wednesday night I went to see a movie in a park in Auckland called Grey Lynn Park.
It was part of a series of free events put on by the Auckland City Council called Movies In Parks.

We arrived before 7 because we thought it was staring at 7. But the movie didn’t actually start until after 8.

Before the movie, a band called Collapsing Cities played.

There were people selling drinks and popcorn.

Lots of people had bought picnics with them as well as chairs, bean bags, blankets and cushions.

The screen was really cool. I’ve never seen anything like it before.

The film started just as the sun was setting. And by the time it finished it was completely dark.

The movie we watched was called Goodbye Pork Pie. It’s a New Zealand film that came out in 1981. I’d never seen it before and I loved it. It was so funny.

#1181 The Datsuns At Nixon Park, Auckland, NZ

Show 1181 Saturday 27 February
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Today I went to check out a free concert which was in a park in Auckland called Nixon Park.
It was a really hot sunny day and there were quite a few people there.

There was coffee for sale, but people seemed to be more interested in other beverages.

I saw kids on bikes and scooters and other kids shooting hoops, a guy flying a kite, police officers.

A band called The Datsuns was playing. I'd never heard of them ... but they seemed to be pretty popular.

They didn't really look like daytime people and they said as much.

You know I felt pretty apprehensive about playing during the day. It always feels kind of like out of our element. But, ah, I have thrust that aside and, ah, we shall go on.

I thought the stage was pretty cool - it folded out from a truck.

There were signs by the stage saying: Auckland City Council, putting it on for you.
It reminded me of the campaign we saw at an event two weeks ago: Get It On.

But they weren't talking about the same thing, of course.

#1174 Go By Bike Breakfast 2010 Auckland City

Show 1174 Saturday 20 February
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

On Wednesday I went to an event in Auckland called Go By Bike Breakfast.

If you turned up on a bike you could get a free breakfast.
It was great. There was free fruit, orange juice, coffee.

OK, got flat whites here. Long black’s just waiting, yip, ‘nother flattie …

You could even get a free bike check.

The event was put on by the Auckland City Council.

We’ve got guys saying they don’t mind paying their rates now they’re getting free breakfast from the city. So enjoy yourselves, we’ll have spot prizes in a minute. And of course we’ve got a bike to give away later in the morning.
(Jon Bridges)

The MC was a guy called Jon Bridges.

Where are you from?
Um, we’re from Pt. Chev and we go to Saint Mary’s College.
Awesome. Did you get here by bike?
Yeah.
Brilliant.

There was a TV presenter from a show called Breakfast.

And what are you doing here this morning?
We’re just doing a bit of filming, behind, as you can see there.
A bit of crossing to Breakfast.
A bit of, yeah, weather crossing into Breakfast, yeah.
Great, well enjoy that, we’ll keep quiet while you do it.
Thanks, man.

We’re coming here live this morning from the Go By Bike Breakfast down here at Auckland’s Viaduct. If you’ve just woken up and you have got a bike outside, take that to work, leave the car at home. You’re being encouraged to, along with thousands of other Kiwis today, ah, the ladies behind me will be, ah, testament to the fact that you can ride and have fun as well.
(Tamati Coffey)

The mayor of Auckland City turned up and was interviewed on TV.
He also gave us a lecture about bike safety.

Good to see you all here. Hope you’re having a great breakfast. And I hope you’re staying safe.
Running red lights is for the mugs. Please don’t do it and please encourage your friends not to do it. I don’t lecture you because you do it, I only tell you because you’re part of the cycling fraternity. And when you’re at a red light and stop and wait and are law-abiding, then those delinquents that are coming through can clearly see that you are role model leaders in the biking fraternity. So thank you for that.
(John Banks)

And the mayor even made a promise.

And next year … let me make a promise … unless it’s very, very wet, I’ll rock up on the bike.

Part of the event was a commuter challenge.

This year the, the contestants in it are, ah, all members of the Ponsonby Premiers Rugby team. So it will be good to see how their big thighs go on those bikes.

Well congratulations, you’re the first commuter in, in the commuter challenge and you’ve beaten the car, so you’ve done very well, give him a round of applause.

So maybe from now on you’ll, you’ll be going by bike?
Um, not too sure about that, aye. Ha ha.
Just say yes.
Yeah, I will, I will.
OK, great, excellent, so yes, we’ve got a positive answer there, that’s great.

And there was another challenge to see who could stand on their pedals for the longest.

All, ah, chrome lugs and everything. I’m just admiring his gear, not admiring his rear, although he is presenting, ah, quite a good view for John and I.

Yeah, but still he’s stopped at the red, that’s more important.

That’s the important thing. He’s stopped at the red, good on him. And, ah, just, ah, just quietly, he’s boring us all now. Um …

3,2,1… yay!

How was that? More than 54? 3.4!

#1160 Relay Swimming Race In Lake Biwa, Japan Part 5 - Final

Show 1160 Saturday 6 February
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

During the race, some of the organizers set up the finish line.
And then we waited for the boats to arrive.

The winning team was Little Mermaid Big LongFeng.
They finished the race in 3 hours 25 minutes and 57 seconds.
It was a new record.

The rest of the teams arrived over the next few hours.

When all the teams had arrived back, everyone picked up some rubbish.

And then it was time for the prize giving.

Today it was so windy at the start
that we weren’t sure what would happen.
But when the going got tough,
we all thought about Morning Musume
and that gave us the strength to continue.
We're planning to come back next year.
Thank you!

We'd definitely like to enter again next year.

We'd really like to do it again next year.
Thank you.

And the winners of today's race are
Little Mermaid Big LongFeng!
Congratulations!

We’re hoping to continue our winning streak next year.
So feel free to try and beat us …
if you can.
Good luck.
Thank you.

Finally, there was a group photo.

#1153 Relay Swimming Race In Lake Biwa, Japan Part 4

Show 1153 Saturday 30 January
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

The fifth swimmer was Ikeda Katsuhito.

I normally swim in the ocean. The water in the lake is warmer and there's no jellyfish and the water's not salty so even when I swallowed a bit, it wasn't too bad. So the conditions were good.

The last swimmer got cramp, so the reserve took over two minutes before his 30 minutes were up.

After about ten minutes, I got cramp. When I saw the sign for the last ten minutes I thought I would make it. But first I got cramp in my left leg, then in both legs. So I got Keisuke to take over. It was a bit of a bummer.

I only swam for a short time but the water was pretty warm and it felt good.
I only had to swim for two minutes so I swam as fast as I could.

After each swimmer had done a round of thirty minutes, they started from the first person again and did ten minutes each.

During the third ten-minute round, they reached the shore and all the swimmers jumped in and ran towards the finish line.

#1146 Relay Swimming Race In Lake Biwa, Japan Part 3

Show 1146 Saturday 23 January
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

The second person to swim was Hoshika Yasuyuki.
He swam for 30 minutes.

It’s so different to swimming in a pool.
Yeah, the waves were pretty big.
You’re fighting against the waves, which takes a lot of energy.
Halfway through, I thought about giving up.

There are waves coming on an angle so it pushes you closer to the boat, but you try and keep away from the boat cause you don’t want to go under here and get caught in the propellers.
So, yeah, it’s hard work. Fun, though.
The sun’s out, the wind’s died down, it’s all good. Yeah.

I swam last year as well.
And last year it was really tough.
This time it felt really good.
Yeah, I really enjoyed the swim.

#1139 Relay Swimming Race In Lake Biwa, Japan Part 2

Show 1139 Saturday 16 January
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

The boats left Hikone Port at about 7 o’clock in the morning and motored out 16 km to the other side of the lake, where the race was starting from.

Hello!

The team we came to see, Little Mermaid, Big LongFeng, took a group photo.

These are the six swimmers, reserve swimmer, camera person, girlfriend.

The swimmers did some stretches and then went for a warm-up swim.

Then the people who were swimming first went to the start line and everyone waited for the race to start.

One minute to go!

Earlier the race had been on the verge of being cancelled because of the rough conditions on the lake but luckily the conditions improved and the race was able
to go ahead.

The first swimmer for Little Mermaid Big LongFeng was Big Kurokawa.

Kurokawa-san, this way!

Each swimmer swam for 30 minutes.

The other team members held up a sign and shouted encouragement, directions
and how much time was left.

Last five minutes!

After 30 minutes, the first swimmer tagged the second swimmer and then climbed back in the boat.

Could you hear what we were calling out when you were swimming?

I couldn't work out exactly what you were saying.
I knew you were calling, "Come here, come here!"
But it felt strange to swim away from the other swimmers.

To be continued …

#1137 New Year Holiday On Aotea / Great Barrier Island Part 4

xShow 1137 Thursday 14 January
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

The day before we left Great Barrier Island, we went to the opening of an art exhibition.

They held a welcoming ceremony called a pōwhiri.

Haere mai! Haere mai! Haere mai! (Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!)
Karanga mai rā! Karanga mai rā! Karanga mai rā! (Call us! Call us! Call us!)

We're not going to say too many words.
We're going to sing a waiata and we're going to have a karakia on the food.

Purea nei e te hau (scattered by the wind)
Horoia e te ua (washed by the rain)
Whitiwhitia e te ra (transformed by the sun)
Mahea ake nga poraruraru (swept away are all anxieties)

There was some delicious fruit.
And I loved some of the artwork.

The next day, sadly, it was time to leave the beautiful island.

We caught the 1 o'clock ferry back to Auckland.
On the boat we watched a couple of movies - The Proposal and The Hangover.

Towards the end of the journey, we went up to the top to have a look at the view.

I looked at a map and tried to figure out where we were.

So we could be around here, or maybe around here.

I couldn't quite work it out so I asked one of the crew members.

This, there ... so we just came through here.

Purea nei e te hau
- Scattered by the wind

Horoia e te ua
- washed by the rain

Whitiwhitia e te ra
- transformed by the sun

Mahea ake nga poraruraru
- swept away are all anxieties

Makere ana nga here
- removed are all restrains

E rere wairua e rere
- Fly free O spirit, fly

Ki nga ao o te rangi
-to the clouds in the heavens

Whitiwhitia e te ra
- transformed by the sun

Mahea ake nga poraruraru
- swept away are all anxieties

Makere ana nga here
- removed are all restrains

I really loved Peter Williams' paintings and sculpture that I saw at the exhibition.

I love this painting on his site.

#1136 New Year Holiday On Aotea / Great Barrier Island Part 3

Show 1136 Wednesday 13 January
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV

On the 2nd of January we went to an event called the Great Barrier Island New Year's Picnic Day.

It's two dollars each.

It was held at Horseshoe Paddock at Kaitoke Beach.

People were selling pottery, garlic, earings, second hand books, peg families, solar water heaters and windmills.

Some kids were having a lot of fun on a water slide.
And there were also races for kids.

Run through here, fast!

Well done! You won!

Kia tūpato! Haere! Haere! Haere!
(Be careful! Go! Go! Go!)

The next day, there was another picnic.
The Teddy Bears and Faries Picnic.

Winnie-the-Pooh greeted us at the gate.

Hello. Welcome. Hello. Welcome.

Inside was an amazing garden, with Peter Rabbit, The Owl and the Pussycat, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and dress ups!

I had fun playing with a hula hoop.
And I blew a few bubbles.

notes

Maybe a better translation for Kia tūpato! would be "look out!" or "watch out!". I'm not sure.

#1135 New Year Holiday On Aotea / Great Barrier Island Part 2

Show 1135 Tuesday 12 January
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

On the last day of 2009, my aunty took us on a tour of the island.
First we checked out the shops in Claris, one of the settlements on The Barrier.

Then we went on a few short walks.
We went up the track to the Windy Canyon lookout.

The second walk we went on was to the Kaitoke hot springs.

The walk was beautiful. And soaking in the hot springs was divine.

The next day, on the first day of 2010, we went for a walk along Medlands Beach and
climbed a hill called Sugarloaf.

The view from the top was stunning.

#1134 New Year Holiday On Aotea / Great Barrier Island Part 1

Show 1134 Monday 11 January 2010
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

I spent New Year's this year on an island in New Zealand called Aotea or Great Barrier Island.
My boyfriend and I stayed with my aunty and uncle, my cousin and my cousin's cousin.
There are several ways to get to the island from Auckland.
We chose the cheapest and slowest way - going by a ferry called SeaLink.

The ferry was due to leave at 7am from the Viaduct Harbour so we arrived at quarter to 6.
It was the 29th of December and the ferry was packed.
I'd been warned that the service was basic but it still surprised me just how basic it actually was.

The trip out today's probably going to take around about four hours and twenty minutes.
We're a quarter of an hour, quarter of an hour late leaving.
We should be in Tryphena before 12 o'clock.

The weather wasn't so great, so we spent most of the time sleeping in the rooms they
describe on their website as "movie theatres".

We got to the island in one piece.
Apparently the cargo on these ships isn't always so luckly.

My aunty picked us up and drove us about twenty minutes to the beach where we were staying - Medland's Beach.
It was an amazing place with beautiful flowers, cute insects and white sand.
