#1276 Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Baggage, The L Word, Obama Swims, I Skimmed It

Show 1276 Tuesday 17 August
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today’s movie is called Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

It’s based on a comic book series … and from the trailer I think it looks pretty funny.

It’s about a guy called Scott who meets the girl of his dreams, called Ramona, and he has to defeat her seven evil exes who are trying to kill him.

At one point in the trailer (1:41) Ramona and Scott are talking and Ramona says to Scott: We all have baggage.
And he says: Well my baggage doesn't try to kill me.

* The full line is actually: Well my baggage doesn't try and kill me every five minutes.

Baggage, or emotional baggage, is, according to this definition: the beliefs and attitudes that somebody has a result of their past experiences.

When people talk about baggage in relationships, it’s usually a bad thing and it usually means something like psychological damage or unresolved anger that you’ve brought with you into your current relationship.

They don’t usually mean evil ex-boyfriends who are trying to kill you.

In another part of the trailer (1:24), Scott’s friend is giving him relationship advice and he says: If she's the girl of your dreams, then you have to let her know. Step up your game Scott, break out the L word.

The L word is love, so he’s saying: If she’s your ideal girl, then you have to tell her. Tell her you love her.

But Scott doesn’t get what he’s staying. And he says: Lesbian?
And his friend says: The other L word.
And Scott says: Lesbians?

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today Barack Obama went for a swim.

Last weekend Barack Obama went for a swim in Florida.
The White House published a photo of the swim on their Flickr account.
CNN quoted a local university professor saying Obama’s decision to swim carried tremendous symbolic weight.
He said since the oil spill people have been worried they’ll get diseases if they swim in the Gulf of Mexico.
And Obama’s swim helped show people the Gulf Coast was still open for business despite the worst oil spill in American history.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 17th of August.
Kia ora.

Wow … slow news day?

Damn, you can’t see his hot body this time.
Sigh!

He swam at Alligator Point. “Alligator” comes from a Spanish word. This clearly shows he’s not a real American!

Will I get covered in oil like the fish?
No, honey, the Gulf of Mexico is a long way from New Zealand.

We’re swimming in water that Obama touched! How exciting!
Hmm …

Word of the Day

Today’s word is skim.

Skim has several meanings, one of them is: read something quickly, noting only the important points.

In the movie the first evil ex-boyfriend arrives to fight Scott, but Scott doesn’t know what’s going on. And he says: We’re fighting over Ramona?
And the evil ex says: Didn’t you get my email explaining the situation?
And Scott replies: I skimmed it.
