#999 Duplicity, Bus Stop Scale, Insane, Whose Thong?

Show 999 Tuesday 17 March
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a scene from a new movie called Duplicity which is an American romantic comedy spy-thriller film – well that’s what it says in Wikipedia anyway.

The movie stars Julia Roberts and Clive Owen.
In this scene a woman called Claire – played by Julia Roberts - is accusing a man called Ray - played by Clive Owen - of being unfaithful.

Unfaithful: engaging in sexual relations with a person other than one’s lover or spouse.

Claire holds up some underwear and says: Are these hers?

They’re actually her own … you can see that in the clip that they show in the trailer – but she’s just testing him for some reason.

By the way, she calls it a thong. This kind of underwear has many different names. In New Zealand it’s usually called a G-string and in Japan a T-back. And I just looked it up in Wikipedia and apparently, if you want to get technical, G-string and T-back are both kinds of thongs and there are also V-strings and C-strings.

Anyway, it doesn’t really matter. I just think this conversation is a fun one to study and it could be useful. You might never be in this exact situation, but you could be in a situation where you’re trying to establish who owns an object. Or perhaps someone is accusing you of something and you have to defend yourself.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today a fitness club in the Netherlands has advertized its gyms by turning a bus stop into a scale.

Fitness First is an international chain of health clubs. For their latest advertising campaign, they’ve turned a bus stop into a scale. When someone sits on the seat an electronic display on the side of the bus stop displays their weight.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 17th of March.
Kia ora.

What are the most common ski injuries?

I guess the most common ones would be, um, leg breaks. I think that’s probably one of the most common. Um, where somebody will fall and often it’s um … actually they tend to get more, ah, broken legs at slower speeds because the ski’s designed to release the boot, um, and it will do the faster we’re going, the ski will release very quickly. But at a slower speed it’s harder for the boot to … there’s less momentum to pull the boot out. So it tends to be if someone would fall and the ski doesn’t, doesn’t come off, it tends to twist around and that’s when we get a bit of a nasty break unfortunately.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is insane.

In today’s conversation, Ray says: This is insane.

Insane basically means the same as crazy. So he’s saying that the situation – her accusing him of being unfaithful, is crazy or irrational.

If you think an idea is very stupid, you can say: That’s insane!

Insane is also used as slang to mean impressive.

This is an example from Urban Dictionary: Man, I wish I could play guitar like Jimi Hendrix. He has some insane guitar skills.

Step 1: Repeat Ray’s lines.
Step 2: Read Ray’s lines and talk to Claire.

Claire Are these hers?

Ray What is that?

Claire It’s a thong. It was in your closet.

Ray That’s not possible.

Claire Well whose are they?

Ray Nobody’s because it’s impossible.

Claire Impossible, what? That someone would leave them or you’d forget? Or I’d find them?

Ray Impossible because I’ve been faithful. Which closet?

Claire Which closet …

Ray This is insane.

Claire You’re denying this?

Ray Absolutely.
