Show 690 Wednesday 2 April

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s mistake is: Do you know where is the post office?
This should be: Do you know where the post office is?

I’ve seen people make this mistake quite often. And I think it’s understandable because if you ask: Where is the post office? Then the is comes after the where. But if you add do you know to the start, then the is changes position to the end.

Here are some other examples which follow this pattern:

Why is she crying?
Do you know why she’s crying?

How did she get here?
Do you know how she got here?

What’s she drinking?
Do you know what she’s drinking?

Who’s she?
Do you know who she is?

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, this is Stick News. Yesterday, YouTube Rickrolled everybody as an April Fools’ Day prank.

Rickrolling is an Internet meme involving Rick Astley's music video for his song "Never Gonna Give You Up".
Wikipedia says, in a Rickroll, a person provides a link they claim is relevant to the topic at hand which actually takes the user to the Astley video.
Rickrolling is a variation of an earlier internet prank called duckrolling.
On April Fools’ Day YouTube rickrolled its users by linking every video on the homepage to the Rick Ashley video.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 2nd of April.

Word Of The Day

Today’s word is meme.
This word looks like it could be pronounced mimi or meme – but no, it rhymes with seem. Meme.

Wikipedia says: A meme consists of any unit of cultural information, such as a practice or idea, that gets transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another.

And an internet meme is a new term used to describe a catchphrase or concept that spreads in a faddish way from person to person via the Internet.

Rick Rolling is an example of an internet meme.

#421 What did they do?

Step 1: Repeat Jake’s lines.
Step 2: Read Jake’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Jake Did you see any other interesting April Fools’ Day pranks?

Sarah I thought Smosh’s one was pretty well done.

Jake What did they do?

Sarah They said they’d been sued by the makers of Pokemon for using the Pokemon song without permission.

Jake Is that what they did?

Sarah Yeah, so I believed it for a couple of seconds because I was just thinking that it was kind of strange that they could get away with launching their careers by using a song without permission.

Jake But they didn’t get sued.

Sarah No. The video was just removed from YouTube about a year ago.

Show 689 Tuesday 1 April

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today I’m going to talk about a movie called Taxi Driver.

Taxi Driver is a pretty famous movie. It came out in 1976, back when Jodie Foster was only 13.

The main character in the movie is called Travis and he’s played by Robert De Niro.

Travis is a taxi driver and he becomes interested in a woman called Betsy - played by Cybill Shepherd - who is a campaign volunteer for the New York Senator who is running for president.

And the scene we’re going to do today is from when they first meet. Travis goes into the campaign office to ask her out.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today, Wikipedia has published its 10 millionth article.

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that was started in 2001.
On Thursday the 27th of March 2008, the 10 millionth article was published.
The article was about a guy called Nicholas and it was published in the Hungarian Wikipedia.
Nicholas was an English artist famous for his paintings of British royalty.
Wikipedia founder, Jimmy Wales said: “Ten million articles is something we could never have imagined happening so fast when we embarked on Wikipedia in 2001. This is a testament to the incredible dedication of our volunteers around the world."

And that was Stick News for Tuesday 1st of April.

Word Of The Day

Today’s word is fool because April the first is April Fools’ Day.

Fool is a noun and it means the same thing as idiot.
You can say: You fool! Or just: Fool!
Or: He’s such a fool!

Fool is also a verb and an adjective. And when I looked it up I discovered that there is also a desert in England called fool.

So maybe in England you could say something like this: Hey fool! Stop fooling around and come and eat some fool.

Watch this coversation here from :24

Travis
Hi, I’d like to volunteer.

Guy Great. I’ll take you right over here.
Travis That’s all right. I’d rather volunteer to her if you don’t mind.

Betsy Why do you feel that you have to volunteer to me?

Travis Because I think that you are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

Betsy Thanks. But what do you think of Palantine?

Travis Well, I ...

Betsy Charles Palantine, the man you’re volunteering to help elect president.

Travis Well, I’m sure he’ll make a good president. I don’t know exactly what his policies are, but I’m sure he’ll make a good one.

Betsy You want to canvass?

Travis Yeah, I’ll canvass.

Betsy How do you feel about the senator’s stand on welfare?
Travis I don’t really know the senator’s stand on welfare, but I’m sure it’s a good stand.

Betsy You sure of that?

Travis Yeah.
