#1228 TDES Wall Opens, StoryCorps Q+A, Larry King Retires, Cope

Show 1228 Thursday 1 July
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

It’s the first of July and today is the grand opening of The Daily English Show supporter’s wall.
You can see the wall on our site thedailyenglishshow.com. There are 100 bricks on the wall and as you can see, most of them are still empty.
Next month, we’re selling them for a fundraising project, but this month they’re absolutely free, and our aim is to fill up all the bricks on the wall.

So please help us out and claim a brick. You don’t have to buy one next month, you can just have one this month.

It’s very easy, just send us an email (thedailyenglishshow@gmail.com) telling us what you’d like written on the brick, it can be just words or a logo or picture if you have one, and tell us the site you’d like the brick to link to. It can be your company or organisation’s website, or a personal blog, YouTube channel, twitter account, whatever.

Today we’re studying a video made by StoryCorps – which is the organization I talked about yesterday.

They record people’s stories in America and this video is an animation that’s been made to one of the interviews.

It’s a boy asking questions to his mother. The boy’s name Joshua and he asks his mother questions like:

Have you ever felt like life is hopeless?

And: Have you ever lied to me?

And I think the mother’s answers are really thoughtful and honest. And I found the video quite moving.

Near the end of the video, Joshua asks his mother: Did I turn out to be the son you wanted when I was born, like did I meet your expectations ...?

And his mother says: You've exceeded my expectations, sweetie.

To exceed means to go beyond. So she’s telling him that he turned out to be an even greater son than she’d hoped for.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is cope.

to deal successfully with sth difficult

For example: He wasn’t able to cope with the stresses and strains of the job.

Many things can be hard to cope with: work, relationships, parenting, studying.

In today’s video Joshua asks his mum: Have you ever thought you couldn't cope with having a child?

conversations with sarah
#783 What's colic?

Step 1: Repeat Joshua’s lines.
Step 2: Read Joshua’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Joshua Have you ever thought you couldn't cope with having a child?

Sarah I remember when you were a baby, you had really bad colic so you would just cry and cry and I didn’t know what …

Joshua What's colic?

Sarah It's when you get this stomachache and all you do is scream for like four hours and …

Joshua Even louder than Amy does?

Sarah You were pretty loud, but Amy's was more high-pitched.

Joshua From a scale of one to ten, do you think your life would be different without animals?

Sarah I think it would be an eight without animals because they add so much pleasure to life.

Joshua How else do you think your life would be different without them?

Sarah I could do without things like cockroaches and snakes.

Joshua Well, I'm okay with snakes as long as they're not venomous or can constrict you or anything.

Sarah I'm not a big snake person.

Joshua But cockroach is just the insect we love to hate.

Sarah Yeah, it really is.

Joshua Have you ever felt like life is hopeless?

Sarah Uh, when I was a teenager I was very depressed and I think that can be quite common with teenagers who think a lot, you know, when they're perceptive.

Joshua Am I like that?

Sarah You are very much like that.

Joshua Do you have any mortal enemies?

Sarah I would say my worst enemy is sometimes myself, but I don't think I have any mortal enemies.

Joshua Have you ever lied to me?

Sarah Mmm, I probably have, but I try not to lie to you, even though sometimes the questions you ask make me uncomfortable.

Joshua Like when we go on our walks, some of the questions I might ask?

Sarah Yeah, but you know what, I feel it's really special that you and I can have those kind of talks, even if sometimes I feel myself blushing a little bit.

Joshua I think it feels like everyone seems to like Amy more, like she's like the perfect little angel.

Sarah Well, I can understand why you think that people like Amy more and I'm not saying it's because of your Asperger's Syndrome, but being friendly comes easily to Amy whereas I think for you, it's more difficult, but the people who take the time to get to know you love you so much.

Joshua Like Ben or Eric or Carlos...

Sarah Yeah, and ...

Joshua Like I have better quality friends but less quantity?

Sarah I wouldn't judge the quality, but I think ...

Joshua I mean, like first it was like Amy loved Claudia, then she hated Claudia, she loved Claudia, then she hated Claudia ...

Sarah You know what, part of that's a girl thing, honey. The important thing for you is that you have a few very good friends and, really, that's what you need in life.

Joshua Did I turn out to be the son you wanted when I was born, like did I meet your expectations and...?

Sarah You've exceeded my expectations sweetie, because, you know, sure you have these fantasies of what your child's going to be like, but you have made me grow so much as a parent because you ...

Joshua Well, I was the one who made you a parent.

Sarah You were the one who made me a parent, that's a good point. But, also because you think differently from, you know, what they tell you in the parenting books, I really had to learn to think out of the box with you and it's made me much more creative as a parent and as a person and I'll always thank you for that.

Joshua And it helped when Amy was born?

Sarah And that helped when Amy was born, but you are just so incredibly special to me and I'm so lucky to have you as my son.
