#966 Hey Man, Mona Lisa Funeral, Jacinda From NZ, Quintessential

Show 966 Thursday 12 February
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

The video I recommend today is for a brand of corn chips called Doritos.

This ad is pretty popular - it won an ad competition on YouTube. And I think it’s pretty funny. Chuckle-worthy, maybe, but not really roll-on-the-floor hilarious.

It starts off with a man greeting his co-worker and asking him a question. He says: Hey man, what’s that?

Hey man is a pretty common greeting. There are many ways you can greet people in English, and different greetings are more popular in different countries and with different people …

Here are a few other English greetings:

Hey, mate. Hey, buddy. Hey, bro.

What’s your favourite way to greet people in English?

The Acadia Report

Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada

On The Acadia Report today I want to tell you about Ron James, he’s a Canadian Comedian who used to go to Acadia University and you can see some videos of him talking about Acadia and Wolfville on the Acadia YouTube channel.

And there are quite a few videos of Ron James doing stand up on YouTube. For example, there’s one video of him talking about Tim Hortons. Tim Hortons is a famous Canadian fast food restaurant. I remember the first time that I heard of Tim Hortons when I was in Canada – someone was talking about it and I said: What’s Tim Hortons? Or I might have even said: Who’s Tim Horton? And they were really surprised that I’d never heard of Tim Hortons because it’s so famous in Canada.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora in Stick News today an exhibition has opened in Paris called The Funeral of Mona Lisa.

The Mona Lisa is one of the most famous paintings in the world. It was painted by an Italian artist 500 years ago and is now on display in a museum in France. A giant grey version of the painting is now on display in the room next to the original. It’s the first time first time a work inspired by the Mona Lisa has been on display so close to the original. The new work is part of an exhibition called The Funeral of Mona Lisa. Reuters reported the display consists of five paintings including two mysterious images that look like grey clouds and are dotted with images of skulls, a portrait of the artist’s dead father and a self-portrait of the artist in a deathlike pose.

And that was Stick News for Thursday 12th of February.
Kia Ora.

TDES Niseko Snow Report
on The Annupuri Gondola

thanks to: Jacinda

Where are you from?
I am from New Zealand.

Whereabouts in New Zealand?
I’ve been living in Queenstown for probably six or seven years.

Where do you usually go snowboarding in New Zealand?
The same as Bryn, ah, Coronet Peak and Remarkables.

How long have you been snowboarding?
About seven or eight years.

How long have you been in Niseko?
We’ve been here for about three weeks. Um, got another week or so to go, so, a month in total.

Is this your first time in Niseko?
Yes, first time Niseko and Japan.

What are the conditions like today?
Today’s conditions, ah, a bit of light cloud. Had some fresh snow yesterday I think. Um, you can find nice pockets in between the trees, some new … some fresh snow to slash. Yeah, good visibility, yeah, high cloud. It’s good today.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is quintessential.

In the video of Ron James talking about Wolfville, which is the town where Acadia University is, he says: Wolfville is the quintessential collage town. It’s perfect.

What does quintessential mean?

adj. representing the most perfect or typical example.

The example here is: He was the quintessential tough guy.

I was looking for an example online and I found someone wrote this question (I meant to say: a post) in a forum with the title: Quintessential NZ music?

And then they wrote:
Okay, I'm not really sure what quintessential means. I just wanted somebody to think I'm smart.
