Show 692 Friday 4 April

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s song is Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley. Rick Astley is from the UK and his song Never Gonna Give You Up came out in 1987. And in the UK it was the best selling single that year. And now, as you probably know, the video is the basis for the internet meme Rickrolling.

Gonna is an informal way of saying going to.

The chorus of the song goes like this:

Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

So I think the singer is just trying to say that he is going to be a great boyfriend.

And there are lots of phrasal verbs in this which is excellent. You can learn a lot from this song.
Give up is a phrasal verb that has many meanings. I’m kind of confused about what it means here. I just looked it up and it says this:

Give sb up
1. (also give up on sb especially in AmE) to believe that sb is never going to arrive, get better, be found etc.
2. to stop having a relationship with sb

I don’t think I’ve ever heard give sb up (apart from in this song) – but I use give up on sb quite often. Anyway, I guess it means either one of those two.

Let sb down Is a common phrasal verb. It means: to fail to help or support sb as they had hoped or expected.

Rick Astley will never let you down.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, this is Stick News. Yesterday a pregnant man was a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Thirty four years ago a girl was born in Hawaii. Her parents called her Tracey.
When she grew up Tracey decided she wanted to be a man. So she took drugs to change her body and she changed her name to Thomas and legally became a man.
Five years ago Thomas married a woman called Nancy.
Nancy couldn’t have children, so Thomas decided he would have a baby.
Now, he is pregnant.
Yesterday, he was interviewed on Oprah.
He said: I think that different is normal and love makes a family. And that's all that matters.

And that was Stick News for Friday 4th of April.

Word Of The Day

Today’s word is ache.

Ache is a verb which means: to feel a continuous dull pain, as in: my shoulder is aching.

It also means: to have a strong desire for sb/sth or to do sth.
For example: I’m aching to go surfing again.

The word ache is in today’s song:

We've know each other for so long

Your heart’s been aching

But you're too shy to say it

Here ache means to yearn or long.
So it basically means: you want me.

THE SNOW REPORT
in Kutchan

So this is what Kutchan looks like in spring. There’s a whole lot of dirty old snow sitting in the fields, melting. I wonder how long it will take before it’s all gone. A month? Two months? I don’t know.

friday joke

Waiter! Waiter! What’s this fly doing in my soup?

Step 1: Repeat Luke’s lines.
Step 2: Read Luke’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Sarah I like what that guy said.

Luke What guy?

Sarah The pregnant man.

Luke What did he say?

Sarah He said: different is normal.

* He says this here from 2:25

Luke
Mmm, I guess that’s true.

Sarah Yeah, totally. It’s like, some people are commenting that the child will get teased at school ...

Luke It will though, don’t you think?

Sarah Yeah, maybe. But everybody has something different about them. I’ve never met anyone in my entire life who doesn’t have a story about feeling different than the other kids because of something unusual about them or their family.

Show 691 Thursday 3 April

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

The third of April is The Daily English Show’s birthday. We started on Monday the 3rd of April, 2006. So we are now two years old.

So, happy birthday to us and thank you – thank you for your feedback and for your wonderful support.

And thank you to Powderlife Magazine who has just done an article about us. Obviously, they have excellent taste.

They also published one of knf’s photos – this was taken when they hiked up Yotei-zan, if you remember show #665.

But this is a local magazine, so you’re just going to have to come here and pick one up if you want to read the article. Or you could check their website, they might have the article there at some stage.

And if you do live near here, we’re going to be going to Loaf Lounge on Friday the 11th to have a few drinks to celebrate our second birthday and the 700th show which is coming up soon.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today an 18-year-old New Zealander has been convicted of international cybercrime and faces up to seven years in jail.

This 18-year-old boy is from a small town called on the Coromandel Peninsula in Aotearoa.
The New Zealand Herald reported he was homeschooled during his high school years and had no formal training in computers.
He taught himself computer programming and at some point began experimenting with malware and created his own bot code.
Police said his code is "considered by international cybercrime investigators to be among the most advanced bot programming encountered".
In February 2006, the Kiwi boy helped attack a computer server at the University of Pennsylvania and cause thousands of dollars of damage.
He was tracked down after an FBI investigation and has now pleaded guilty to six charges including dishonest use of a computer, damaging a computer system and possessing software for committing crime.

And that was Stick News for Thursday 3rd of April.

Word Of The Day

Today’s word is malware. Wikipedia says malware is: software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent.

The word malware comes from the words malicious and software.

Malicious means nasty or evil. Having or showing hatred and a desire to harm sb or hurt their feelings.
