#1185 More Apostrophe Mistakes, ODEPO, River Surfing, Face Plant, Please Rob Me

Show 1185 Wednesday 3 March
Watch today's show at YouTube

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we have another apostrophe mistake for you.
They seem to be everywhere here in New Zealand.

There’s a market near where I live called Victoria Park Market.
And this is from a sign in front of one of the shops there:

Owned and operated by New Zealander’s

The point of that s is to make the word plural, so they don’t need an apostrophe.

Now, this is what I don’t get. This is a sign that someone had to order and pay for. I mean, if someone makes a typo in an email or on a chalkboard OK, whatever, it can be easily fixed. But when you have to pay a few hundred dollars for a sign that’s going to be there for a long time, I just don’t get why people don’t check it carefully.

Anyway, the funny thing is, they have another sign and on that sign there are two more apostrophe mistakes.

New Zealands finest souvenir’s at great prices

There should be an apostrophe here and there shouldn’t be one here.

This is the page for The Daily English Show.

Kia ora in Stick News today around 80 surfers in England rode a 5 star tidal wave up a river.

The River Severn is the longest river in Great Britain.
When the tide comes in a wave travels up the river against the direction of the current.
This is called a tidal bore.
On the River Severn, the largest bores occur in spring.
When the big bores are expected, river surfing enthusiasts flock to the river to ride the wave.
Today’s wave was about two metres high and was predicted to be the biggest wave of the year.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 3rd of March.
Kia ora.

Spring has sprung! Yay!

Off to catch the bore!

Word of the Day

Today’s word is face plant.

This is a face and this is a plant. But what is a face plant?

At the Go By Bike Breakfast last month I saw a kind of billboard made by the council encouraging people to stop at red lights when they are on a bicycle.

And they list some of the things that could happen if you don’ t stop at a red light.

Such as: crash, buckled wheel, hit pedestrian and face plant.

A face plant is when you fall and land on your face.

Step 1: Read Jake’s lines.
Step 2: Repeat Jake’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Sarah Have you seen that site Please Rob Me?

Jake No, what’s it about?

Sarah It’s listing people who’ve announced via Twitter that they’re not at home.

Jake People who do that are stupid.

Sarah I don’t think so.

Jake Why not?

Sarah Because most people aren’t at home during the day. But it doesn’t mean that they live by themselves so there’s no one else at home or that they have their home address published somewhere on the internet.

Jake It still seems dangerous.

Sarah And how about the people you see doing live reports on TV? It’s not like everyone thinks, “Oh that’s so dangerous we all know they’re not at home.” No, that’s ridiculous.
