#1120 Too Vs To, Academic Earth, As The World Turns, Biff

Show 1120 Wednesday 9 December
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi I'm Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today's mistake comes from a sticker on a plastic bag. I can't actually remember what was inside this bag, but it was some kind of fruit or vegetable that I bought on Sunday.
And the sticker says: Priced too clear.

That too has too many os. It should be to.

Do you know what priced to clear means? It means that they're trying to get rid of the product for some reason. In this case, the fruit ... I think it was fruit ... was almost rotten. So they have reduced the price in order to clear the product from the shelves.

The site I recommend today is called Academic Earth.
This site has videos of lectures from American Universities - I think they're all American.
Of course there are many other sites with videos of university lectures ... but this site is just videos of lectures and everything is really well organized so it's really easy to find stuff.
And the best thing is it's really easy to download the audio. Just click on "subscribe to podcast" under the video and then "audio podcast in iTunes".
And then download the course and just listen to it on your iPod or whatever when you're washing the dishes, folding the washing, walking to work.
I've just downloaded a computer science course because I'm determined not to let my stupid computer get the better of me.

STICK NEWS

As the World Turns debuted on the 2nd of April 1956. More than 13,000 episodes of the soap have now been made.
Wikipedia says it was the most-watched daytime drama from 1958 until 1978, with ten million viewers tuning in each day.
Yesterday it was announced that As the World Turns will end in September, 2010.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 9th of December.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today's word is biff.
In New Zealand this is a common informal word for throw.

This is a sign I saw the other day: Why litter? Take some pride in your community. Biff it in the bin.
I assumed this meaning of the word biff was used all over the world - but it's not in several dictionaries that I've checked ... so now I'm wondering if it's a New Zealand word.

What do you think? Have you heard the word biff used to mean throw before?

conversations with sarah
#711 Do many people watch them?

Step 1: Read Lisa's lines.
Step 2: Repeat Lisa's lines and talk to Sarah.

Lisa Do you watch As the World Turns?

Sarah No, I'd never even heard of it.

Lisa Are there lots of soaps?

Sarah Yeah, there are.

Lisa How many are there in New Zealand?

Sarah There's only one that's made here. But there soaps from other countries on TV. Especially during the daytime.

Lisa Do many people watch them?

Sarah I'm not sure. I guess somebody must watch them ... but how many people would actually admit to watching daytime soaps is another story.
