#1115 Even Flow By Pearl Jam, Wedding Tweet, Taupo Sign, Tiger Woods Joke, Homelessness

Show 1115 Friday 4 December
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Last weekend a band called Pearl Jam played in Auckland and a lot of people I know went to the concert.
Pearl Jam was really popular when I was at high school so I listened to them a lot back then and their songs bring back memories of that time for me.

So I thought we'd study a song by Pearl Jam today, called Even Flow. This song was relased in 1992, back when I was in fourth form ... which is not even called fourth form anymore .... anyway, it was the second year of high school.

As Wikipedia says, this song is about the experience of being a homeless man.

The song starts like this:
Freezing, rests his head on a pillow made of concrete, again

The man seems to have a mental illness. And I think the even flow is referring to the thoughts flowing in and out of his mind,
because he has trouble thinking clearly.

Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away

And the man is also illiterate, which means he can't read.

Kneeling, looking through the paper though he doesn't know to read

STICK NEWS

Kia ora, in Stick News today a man in America paused his wedding at the alter to send a tweet.

Last month a software developer in America got married. Right after the celebrant pronounced the couple man and wife, the man pulled out his phone.
The celebrant told the guests the groom was updating his relationship status on Facebook.
The groom also sent a tweet before putting his phone away and kissing the bride.
"Standing at the altar with @TracyPage where just a second ago, she became my wife! Gotta go, time to kiss my bride."
He posted a video of the stunt on YouTube which has now been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.

And that was Stick News for Friday the 4th of December.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today's word is sharp.
This is a sign I saw in Taupo the other day.

6pm sharp means exactly 6pm.

Now he has a hole in one.

conversations with sarah
#708 Why are there homeless people?

Step 1: Repeat Jim's lines.
Step 2: Read Jim's lines and talk to Sarah.

Jim Are there many homeless people in New Zealand?
Sarah Yeah, there are a few actually - not thousands or hundreds of thousands - but there are a few.
Jim I thought New Zealand was a welfare state.
Sarah Yeah, it is, but ...
Jim Is it hard to get welfare payments?
Sarah No, I don't think so, I think it's pretty straight forward.
Jim So why are there homeless people?
Sarah Um, I'm not really sure. That's a good question.
