#1070 Need A Hand? ESL Printables, Fukuoka Fire, Ignoramuses, Perez Punched

Show 1063 Wednesday 17 June
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s mistake comes from a diary entry that I read on lang-8.
A person called M is writing about how she enjoys studying English but that it’s difficult.
And she writes: Please give me your hand.

Do you know what’s wrong with that?

It should be: Please give me a hand.

Why?
Well, to give someone a hand is an idiom which means to help someone.
But the a doesn’t change. You don’t say: Can I give you my hand? Or: Do you mind giving me a bit of your hand?

It’s always a hand.

Do you need a hand?
Can I give you a hand?
Do you mind giving me a hand for a sec?

Of course, if you’re meaning something else, you can say your hand.
For example if you want to read somebody’s palm you could say: Give me your hand.

Today I’d like to recommend a site for teachers called ESL Printables.
I’ve only just started using it, but I think the way it works is a really good idea.
It’s for sharing ESL worksheets and you can download worksheets for free, but only if you share worksheets that you’ve made.
So how it works is, you upload a worksheet that you’ve made and then each time someone else downloads it you get a point and then you can use those points to download other worksheets. I think it’s an interesting concept and I’ve been using some really good worksheets that I found there too.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today several people have been injured in a beer garden in Japan after they tried to put out a fire by pouring alcohol on it.

On Sunday night a group of people were having a few drinks in a beer garden on the roof of a building in Fukuoka.
For some reason, the gas cartridge stove on their table burst into flames.
Someone tried to put the flames out by pouring alcohol over the fire.
According to news reports the flames then got bigger and the gas cartridge exploded.
5 or 6 people were treated for minor injuries.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 24th of June.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is ignoramus.

An ignoramus is an ignorant or stupid person.

This is usually used in a humorous way. The example here is: When it comes to music, I’m a complete ignoramus.

The other day I saw a clip from the TV show Britain’s Got Talent and there was a couple performing and the audience didn’t seem to like it and they were booing. But one of the judges really liked it and he said: I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m just sorry you were drowned out by the ignoramuses in the audience who just weren’t feeling it like I was.

conversations with sarah
#678 Who punched him?

Step 1: Repeat Jim’s lines.
Step 2: Read Jim’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Sarah Did you hear Perez Hilton got punched?

Jim Who’s that?

Sarah He’s a gossip blogger.

Jim Oh, OK. Who punched him?

Sarah A musician’s manager apparently.

Jim What happened?

Sarah Apparently the musician was complaining about stuff that Perez had written. And then Perez insulted him and then the manager punched Perez.

Jim I guess it’s not surprising that people get angry if he writes nasty stuff about people all the time.

Sarah Yeah, but still, you shouldn’t punch someone, no matter what they say, unless you’re in a dojo or boxing ring of course.
