#1056 Mistake Project Update, Quizlet, Bitterest Argument, NZ Twitter Treasure Hunt

Show 1056 Wednesday 10 June
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today is mistake day, so I thought I’d give you a bit of an update on my mistake experiment.
Today is day number ten and it’s been going really well so far thanks to all the comments that people have left.

One thing that I’ve noticed so far is that my confidence in speaking Japanese has improved. I was pretty nervous on day 1 but I’m getting more and more relaxed on camera. And off camera too – which is good because obviously that’s the point.

I think it’s partly because I’m doing it in public. So now when I talk to someone in Japanese I kind of think, well if they wanted to the whole world could go and watch those videos and see me making mistakes, and laughing nervously, and just generally not sounding very good … so why should I even care if I make a mistake in front of this one person.

So that’s one thing I’ve noticed. And another thing I’ve learnt is how great the annotation system is on YouTube. I’ve never really used it before – but it’s perfect for this exercise. So what I do is, I read people’s comments and then I add the corrections into the video with annotations and I think that’s the thing that really helps me learn from the mistakes. If I just read the comments and didn’t do anything with them, I don’t think I would really learn anything from them.

The site I recommend today is called Quizlet. I think it’s a very cool site for learning vocabulary. You can put in lists of words and definitions and then you can do a whole lot of things with them – like flashcards, quizzes and games. And with the quizzes, you can do them online and you can also easily print them out so teachers can print them out and use them in class. It’s very, very cool. You should go and check it out if you haven’t already.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today a 29-year-old New Zealand man who was rejected by the woman he proposed to held a treasure hunt to give away the unlucky ring.

Anthony bought a diamond ring to propose to his girlfriend.
But things didn’t go as planned.
According to news reports, because he’d bought the ring in Hong Kong, he wasn’t able to return it, so he decided to hold the treasure hunt in the hope of finding a worthy recipient.
The treasure hunt started at 8am on Saturday morning in Wellington, New Zealand.
Anthony posted 14 clues via Twitter and the ring was found by a guy called Ryan.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 10th of June.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is bitter.
Bitter can refer to a kind of taste, like beer.

But beer isn’t the only thing that’s bitter.
Other things can be bitter, like: death, enemies, disappointment, tears, wind.
And you can have a bigger argument.

The other day I saw a news story which started like this:
The longest, bitterest argument in Anchorage's social and political experience returns to center stage Tuesday before the municipal Assembly.

I was surprised because I’d never heard the word bitterest before. The superlative of bitter is usually most bitter. But I looked it up and apparently, you can also say bitterest.

conversations with sarah
#668 How’s the painting going?

Step 1: Repeat Ned’s lines.
Step 2: Read Ned’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Ned How’s the painting going?

Sarah Good. They’ve finished one side and now they’re working on the other side. The side with the balconies on it.

Ned What colour is it?

Sarah It’s The Daily English Show colours actually … it’s like we own the building!

Ned Green?

Sarah Yeah, white and green. The actual walls are white and around the doors and stuff it’s lime green.

Ned Cool.

Sarah Yeah, I love it. I want to paint some massive eyes on the side of the building.
