#1016 It Must Have Been Love, Obama Gives Queen iPod, Dead Birdie

Show 1016 Friday 3 April
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a song called: It Must Have Been Love by Roxette.
This song was originally recorded in 1987 and it was on the soundtrack of the movie Pretty Woman which came out in 1990.
This song brings back a lot of memories for me because it was on the radio all the time when I was a teenager.
It’s a sad song about the end of a relationship.

It must have been love
But it's over now

I think this is a good song to listen to to study must.

In this book, English Grammar In Use, it says: We use must to say that we feel sure something is true.
For example: You’ve been travelling all day. You must be tired.

I think that’s a good example, it’s a pretty common thing to say: You must be tired.
If you’re listening to what someone is saying and you’re trying to empathize with them, then must is very useful.

That must be hard.
That must have been really awkward.
You must so relieved it’s over.

It says here for the past we use: must have done.

For example:

The phone rang but I didn’t hear it. I must have been asleep.
I’ve lost one of my gloves. I must have dropped it somewhere.

Do you know the difference between: I lent it to Tom and I must have lent it to Tom.
If you say: I lent it to Tom, then you are 100 percent sure and you have no doubt.
If you say: I must have lent it to Tom, then you’re pretty sure, but maybe not 100% sure. Or you’ve just come to that conclusion.

If you think you need some practice, try writing something in the comments using must.

Today I thought I’d show you some more footage from the Minami Ski and Snowboard Battle in Annupuri. This time with subtitles.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is palm.

This is a palm.

And this is from today’s song:

In and outside I've turned to water
Like a teardrop in your palm

Palm is also a kind of tree: a palm tree.
I just looked it up and apparently it was named a palm tree because the leaves look like a spread hand.

friday joke

Lucy and Kate were walking along the beach.
Lucy said, “Hey Kate, look at that dead birdie!”
Kate looked up at the sky and said, “Where?”
