#993 Unnecessary Quotes, NZ Cycleway, Recession Vs Depression

Show 993 Wednesday 11 March
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s mistake comes from a sign I saw at a supermarket.
Can you tell what the mistake is?
Yes, that’s right, they’re missing an r.
Information is spelt like this.

The site I recommend today is: unnecesaryquotes.com
This is one of my favourite sites.
It’s a blog of a whole lot of photos that people have sent in of signs where people have used quotation marks incorrectly.

If you’re not sure how to use quotation marks, I recommend you go and check the page on Wikipedia. They are used in several ways. But they are NOT used for emphasis. For emphasis you can use bold, capitals, underline, italics …

So the humour in these pictures often comes from the fact that the person writing the sign has incorrectly used the quotation marks for emphasis – but they’ve ended up conveying something else.

For example, there’s one photo where someone has written q message on a white board which goes like this: 9:30am Thursday “Conference Call”.
So it sounds like “Conference Call” is a secret code or a euphemism for something else.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today part of New Zealand’s plan to beat the recession is to build a cycleway the length of the country.

Last month the New Zealand government held a meeting to present ideas about how to save or create jobs.
One of the ideas is to build a cycleway the length of New Zealand.
Apparently construction will cost about 50 million dollars and employ about 4000 people.
The Prime Minister said they were working "actively and aggressively" on a plan.
He said it could be a major tourist activity - both domestically and for international tourists.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday 11th of March.
Kia ora.

The other day it was really windy.
We live on the fourth floor so it’s pretty noisy on windy days.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is recession.

n. a difficult time for the economy of a country, when there is less trade and industrial activity than usual and more people are unemployed

And there’s another word that’s used to describe an economy that’s not doing so well: depression.

So what’s the difference between a recession and a depression?

Well there’s a famous saying that goes something like: A recession is when your neighbour loses their job and a depression is when you lose yours.

conversations with sarah

#625 Do you think it will help the economy?

Step 1: Repeat Tim’s lines.
Step 2: Read Tim’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Tim What do you think of the cycleway idea?

Sarah I think it’s a pretty good idea actually.

Tim Do you think it will help the economy?

Sarah I don’ t know, but if they’re going to spend money like that then I guess they might as well make something useful rather than just encouraging people to spend money on random things that they don’t even need.
