#964 Ace Ventura: I Don’t Give A Rat’s Arse, Cocoa Covered Immigrants

Show 964 Tuesday 10 February
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a scene from a movie called Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
It’s a comedy which came out in 1994 and stars Jim Carrey.

At the start of the movie the pet detective, whose name is Ace Ventura, poses as a delivery person so he can save a dog.

He knocks on a door and a man opens the door and says: What do you want?
Which is a pretty rude way to answer the door.
But Ace is very polite and even calls him sir.
And when Ace asks the man to sign a form he uses a structure which is pretty common, but you might not have heard of it. He says: if you’ll just sign here.

Actually this is the full sentence: If you’ll just sign here, here and here, initial here and print your name here, we’ll get the rest of the forms out to you as soon as we can.

But when you’re asking people to sign something - if you work in a shop or somewhere like that - you can just say: if you’ll just sign here, please.
That means the same as please sign here - but I think it sometimes sounds a bit more polite. Remember that just because you say please, it doesn’t mean you always sound polite because it can be a kind of order.

Can you please turn that music down?

Here’s another way to ask someone to sign something:

If I can just get you to sign here …

Are there any other ways you can think of?

Do you have any tips for people who are learning how to be ski or snowboard instructors?

I’d say, well, patience is a virtue and, um, also very, very important. Ah, especially when you’re dealing with beginners some people will pick it up very quickly and other people find it very difficult. Um, so you do really have to be, ah, very patient with people. And, um, and I think … another tip to give you is just to say that, um, make sure that, you know, remember that people are there to enjoy themselves. And they’re there for a holiday. You know, we’re not trying to get them through to … we’re not trying to get the students through to like the highest level instructors possible - or whatever level skiers that they’re trying to get to. It’s more about them enjoying themselves and, you know, make sure they, sort of, achieve that, that goal out of it.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is pet.
In says in my dictionary:

v. (especially AmE)
to touch or move your hand gently over an animal or a child in a kind and loving way

Ace Ventura says: Do you mind if I pet him?

If he was in New Zealand he would say: Do you mind if I pat him?

conversations with sarah
#604 What do you want?

Watch this conversation here from 1:38

Step 1: Repeat the man’s lines.
Step 2: Read the man’s lines and talk to Ace Ventura.

Man What do you want?

Ace Ventura HDS, sir, and how are you this afternoon? All righty, then. I have a package for you.

Man Sounds broken.

Ace Ventura Most likely, sir. I'll bet it was something nice, though. Now this is an insurance form, if you’ll just sign here, here and here, initial here and print your name here, we’ll get the rest of the forms out to you as soon as we can. That’s a lovely dog you have there, sir. Do you mind if I pet him?

Man I don’t give a rat’s arse.

Ace Ventura That’s fine, sir. I can finish the rest. You just have yourself a good day. Take care now. Bye bye.
