Show 640 Tuesday 12 February

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s movie is Night of the Living Dead. It’s an American horror movie which was released in 1968.

Watch the movie here.

I don’t really like horror movies – but I chose this one to talk about because it’s in the public domain, which means you can easily watch it on the internet for free.

And I watched it and I actually quite enjoyed it.

And it’s an interesting and significant movie so I think it’s definitely worth watching.

The film had a tremendous impact on the culture of Vietnam-era America. It is so thoroughly laden with critiques of late-1960s American society that one historian described the film as "subversive on many levels."

subversive adj. trying or likely to destroy or damage a government or political system by attacking it secretly or indirectly

In the conversation today, we’re going to do the opening dialogue of the film.

Let me explain some of the words.
Firstly, bug.

At the start of the movie a brother and sister, Barbra and John, arrive at a graveyard to visit their father’s grave and the brother is complaining because he didn’t want to come and then Barbra says:

Barbra: Well, if it really bugged you Johnny, you wouldn’t do it.

Bug is an informal word which means to annoy or irritate somebody.

John then says: You think I want to blow Sunday on a scene like this? You know, I figure we’re either going to have to move mother out here or move the grave into Pittsburg.

Blow
means to waste time or money on something.

So “You think I want to blow Sunday on a scene like this?” means: “You think I want to waste Sunday doing this?”

And figure is an informal verb which means think.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today a famous gate in South Korea has been severely damaged by arson.

Namdaemun used to be the oldest wooden structure in Seoul.
Construction began on the gate in 1395 and was finished in 1398.
The structure has since been rebuilt and it was renovated several times.
In 1962 it was given the status of National Treasure No.1.
At approximately 8:50 p.m. on February 10, 2008, the gate started burning.
Despite the efforts of more than 360 firefighters the wooden structure at the top of the gate was destroyed.
A 69-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson and has confessed to the crime.
Police say the man was upset about not being paid in full for land he had sold to developers.
The government has announced that the gate will be rebuilt and restored. It will take three years and cost an estimated ₩20 billion.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday 12th of February.

#390 She can’t make a trip like this.

Watch the movie here or here. This conversations starts from 2:14

Step 1: Repeat Barbra’s lines.
Step 2: Read Barbra’s lines and talk to John.

Barbra They ought to make the day the time changes the first day of summer.

John What?

Barbra Well, it’s eight o’clock and it’s still light.

John A lot of good the extra daylight does us. You know we’ve still got a three hour drive back. We’re not going to be home until after midnight.

Barbra Well, if it really bugged you Johnny, you wouldn’t do it.

John You think I want to blow Sunday on a scene like this? You know, I figure we’re either gonna have to move mother out here or move the grave into Pittsburg.

Barbra She can’t make a trip like this.

John Oh, I don’t know that she can’t. Is there any of that candy left?

Barbra No.

John Look at this thing: “We still remember” – I don’t. You know, I don’t even remember what the man looks like.

Barbra Johnny it takes you five minutes.

John Yeah, five minutes to put the wreath on the grave and six hours to dive back and fourth. Mother wants to remember, so we trot 200 miles into the country and she stays at home.

Barbra Well, we’re here John, alright.
