Show 503 Tuesday 18 September

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

I’d like to share a monumental TDES moment with you.
Check this out: this is a press pass. It is the first press pass for The Daily English Show.

It’s for a music festival called the Canadian Deep Roots Music Festival or Deep Roots.
Funnily enough we actually tired to get a press pass for a festival in Nelson called Koots Roots – but they weren’t interested.
But when we came here we got one for Deep Roots which was pretty exciting.
That was last weekend. Deep Roots is an annual folk and roots festival here in Wolfville. It’s for three days every September. And we went to the performance on Saturday night. It was really good.
Some of the highlights for me ... well, all the music was great. And I thought a couple of the women especially had really nice voices. And the MCs were good too – they were really funny.
That was at the main event. And then there was another event after that we went to, which was called the late night blues party. And the woman that was performing there – she was awesome.
Then after that there was a guy playing a harmonica – so amazing the sounds that can come out of one little instrument.
Anyway, we took the camera along so here’s some of the footage.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora in Stick News today, according to research in the United States men are more likely than women not to wash their hands after using the bathroom. And the number of men who don’t wash their hands has increased.

Last month, researchers for the American Society for Microbiology spied on people in public restrooms to check if they were washing their hands after they went to the bathroom.
They observed more than 6000 people in four big cities in the United States.
The researchers found that one third of men didn't bother to wash their hands after using the bathroom, compared with 12 percent of women.
When the same survey was done two years ago, only one quarter of men didn't wash their hands, compared with 10 percent of women.
A spokesperson for the Soap and Detergent Association, which co-sponsors the survey said, "guys need to step up to the sink."
The Associated Press reported that doctors say frequent hand washing is the single best thing people can do to avoid getting sick.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 18th of September.
Kia Ora.

ASKING ACADIA
What kind of music do you like?

Um, I like pretty much anything, um jazz mostly though. Um, oldies stuff, like Neil Young.

I mostly like pop music.

Mostly independent rock, although just about any kind of type of easy rock is alright.

I usually like, rap, hip-hop, r and b, rock music and pop.

I like all kinds of music actually, ah, I grew up on the country music because of my parents, and then I got into the rap and the hip-hop because of my friends. So now I like it all and I DJ a little bit of everything, so I kind of like all music. Mostly hip-hop stuff I’d say though.

I don’t know, I really like a lot of different kinds of music.

Ah, rock and roll music and some rap music.

Ah, I like jazz music.

I am a person who actually loves pretty much everything. So, whatever, which country it’s from, I like all kinds of music.

conversations with sarah
#310 Who did you like best at Deep Roots?

Step 1: Repeat Ric’s lines.
Step 2: Read Ric’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Ric Who did you like best at Deep Roots?

Sarah Um ... difficult question, all the music was really good. But for stage presence, definitely Ndidi. She was cool. And she looked really good. Her outfit was perfect.

Ric What was she wearing?

Sarah Um, a dress. It was a kind of unusual dress. It was the kind of dress that you’d probably think it was ugly if you saw it in a shop or if you saw someone just walking down the street wearing it. But on her, on stage, it was great.

Ric That’s an interesting name.

Sarah Yeah, her heritage is Nigerian and she’s from BC and she’s now based in Toronto.

Ric You know a lot about her.

Sarah Yeah, I just read her bio on her website. I like the design of her website too. And there’s even a pronunciation guide for her name, which is useful.

Ric Did you interview any of the musicians?

Sarah Do, we didn’t really have time to set that up. So we just listened to the music. It was great that we got to go.
