Show 1163 Tuesday 9 February
Hi I'm Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today we’re studying a scene from a movie called Boy which is a new film by Taika Waititi.
He’s the guy who made the short film Two Cars, One Night which I talked about on show 1121.
Boy is being released in New Zealand next month, on the 25th of March.
And it looks really good. I’m very keen to see it.
The movie’s about a boy who loves Michael Jackson and he thinks his father’s some kind of hero. But he’s actually in jail. And, so, when he comes out, his father turns out to be quite different from what he imagined.
In one of the clips I saw, a guy in the boy’s class, who’s sitting behind him says: Your dad’s not overseas. He’s in jail for robbery.
And the boy says: Shut up, Kingi. You don’ t know.
And Kingi replies: Yes, he’s in the same cell block as my dad.
A cell is: a room for one or more prisoners in a prison or police station.
And a block is: a large single building subdivided into separate flats or offices.
So a cell block is a building in a prison which is divided into different rooms or cells, where the prisoners stay.
STICK NEWS
Kia ora, in Stick News today, a man has been arrested at an airport in New Zealand after he joked about having a bomb in his bag.
A 44-year-old Australian man flew from Sydney to Hamilton.
When airport staff in Hamilton were questioning him about his luggage, he joked that there was a bomb inside.
He was then arrested.
And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 9th February.
Kia ora.
Word of the Day
Today’s word is honky.
Honky is an offensive word, or a derogatory racial slur as it says in Wikipedia, for a Caucasian person, or a white person.
In the new trailer for the movie Boy, a guy who I think is the school teacher, says:
People call me a dumb honky all the time.
I don’t know how common this word is, so I’m not sure how likely you are to hear it.
And hopefully you won’t hear it or use it because, as I said it’s a derogatory racial slur, which means it’s not a very nice word.
