Hi I'm Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a song called Single Ladies by Beyoncé. This song won the award for Song of the Year at the Grammys.

It’s a pop song, so there are a few lines which are repeated over and over again.

And: If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it

Well I’m not exactly sure if it’s supposed to be like or liked, but anyway, they both make sense.

Shoulda is short for should have, which is also shortened to should’ve.

When you talk at a natural pace, should have often becomes shoulda.

You shoulda come to the gig last it was really good.

But you don’t usually write shoulda, unless you are a teenager writing an email or a text message. I’d recommend writing should’ve or should have.

Anyway, the song is about a girl who has broken up with her boyfriend and is now with another guy but her ex isn’t happy about it. But she’s like, “Hey, we’ve broken up, so it’s none of your business. And anyway now that we’ve broken up and other guys are interested in me, you suddenly realize how much you like me, but it’s too late." Something like that.

And I think the main line, If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it, means: if you really liked me, then you should’ve asked me to marry you when we were still together.

Since 2006, a guy called Jonathan has been the CEO of Sun Microsystems.

Last week Sun was acquired by a company called Oracle.

Jonathan then tweeted about his resignation with a poem.

According to news reports he was the first Fortune 200 boss to tweet his resignation.

Today’s word is act up.

Act up is an informal phrasal verb which means: to behave badly.

And the example here is: The kids started acting up.

And this is a line in today’s song:

So I think she is talking about the fact that she’s going out to clubs and drinking a lot and behaving badly.

Sarah Yeah, about 50 thousand I think. I saw lots of black T-shirts and blue jeans walking in. And then I followed the concert a bit on Twitter too.

Hana What were people writing?

Sarah Oh, people who live near the stadium were saying that they could hear it and stuff. And one guy said that some people that were going to the concert had offered him $20 to park in his driveway.

Hana Did he accept it?

Sarah Yeah, he did.
