#1220 TDES Brick Wall, 43 Things, Obsessed Cats, Dust Nuisance, World Cup

Show 1220 Wednesday 23 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today I’d like to tell you a bit about one of our new fundraising projects.

We are making a supporter’s wall on our site, thedailyenglishshow.com, and we are selling bricks to go on the wall.

The wall will be officially opened on the 1st of July – and the bricks will cost $50 a month. When you buy a brick, you can put your name or logo on it with a link to your site. Or you could just put your name or a picture on the brick, it’s up to you.

So, as I said, the wall will open in July and for the first month, the bricks will be free.
So if you’d like a brick on our wall to show your support for the show – go to this page to find out more: thedailyenglishshow.com/wall

Today is Wednesday, so now it’s time to talk about mistakes. There’s a vegetable shop near where I live and they have a few signs out the front advertising how much the fruit and vegetables cost. And they have a few mistakes on their signs.

For example, on this sign, now is spelt n-a-w. I was surprised to see that, because now isn’t a word that I would have thought people had trouble spelling.

And on this sign they spelt for f-a-r.

So I’m guessing English isn’t their first language, but I could be wrong, of course.
Speaking of wrong, did you notice any other spelling mistakes on this sign?

The other day I came across a site called 43 things. It’s a site for setting goals – which is something that is very important for language learning.

If you’re learning English and you don’t have any goals, stop right now and go and write one down. Even if it is simple as “I will learn five new words by the end of this week”. Goals are very useful and I think this site’s pretty cool and you could find it useful. So go and check it out and tell me what you think.

STICK NEWS

Calvin Klein is an American fashion brand.
They have a range of perfumes including one called Obsession for Men.
According to news reports scientists in central America have been using the scent to study jaguars. They use it to lure the cats into camera traps.
Apparently, scientists tried many other perfumes, but they weren’t as successful.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 23rd of June.
Kia ora.

Calvin Klein Obsession for Men

Hello pretty boy!
He he... looks like it works on cougars too.

Oooh yeah... work it, baby!
PURRRRR!

Here kitty kitty!
Ugh... You've got to be kidding me. Did you get that at the $2 shop?!

Word of the Day

Today’s word is nuisance.

A couple of months ago I saw this sign.

I can’t remember where it was, it might have been on the way down to Hamilton. I drove down there a couple of months ago.

It says: dust nuisance.

A nuisance is: a person or thing causing inconvenience or annoyance.

So this sign is warning people that there’s a lot of dust in this area.
Have you ever seen a sign like this? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sign saying dust nuisance before.

conversations with sarah
#777 I’ve watch three games

Step 1: Repeat Bob’s lines.
Step 2: Read Bob’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Bob Have you been watching the World Cup?

Sarah Yeah, I’ve watch three games, so far.

Bob What time are the games on in New Zealand?

Sarah Well, the ones that I watched started at 11:30pm which isn’t too bad. But most of the games start at like 2am or 4am.

Bob Crazy. So you haven’t been watching those ones?

Sarah No.

Bob It’s hard to stay up that late.

Sarah Yeah, and I don’t have a TV, so basically I couldn’t watch them anyway.

Bob So how did you watch the other games?

Sarah At a bar. It’s hard to find bars that actually show the games though. There was like one bar in the whole of South Auckland that showed the first All White’s game.

filming notes

The ending shot was filmed on the 9th of April 2010, somewhere on the North Island of New Zealand between Auckland and Taupo.
