Show 1173 Friday 19 February
Watch today's show
Hi I'm Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today’s song is called For Today and it’s by a New Zealand band from the 80’s, called: Netherworld Dancing Toys.
One of the members of the Netherworld Dancing Toys was Annie Crummer who I saw at an event last week called the Big Gay Out and she was awesome, I love Annie Crummer.
This song, For Today, is a pretty famous song in New Zealand. It came out in 1985 I think and the video is worth checking out just for the classic 80’s fashion.
The song is a pretty simple love song. It starts out like this:
If you told me this time last year
That I would feel like I do now
Well, I wouldn't have believed you
And later on:
I didn't realize, babe, how much I cared
All I want to do is (
And everything else seems unimportant compared
And I think the part about the truck’s pretty funny:
There's a hole in my well-being
So big you could drive a truck right through
I think you should know that you are the one
Who could probably fill it for good
Well-being is a noun which means: the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy.
And for good is an idiom which means: forever.
STICK NEWS
Kia ora in Stick News today, someone paid more than $10,000 for a doodle drawn by the prime minister of New Zealand.
The current NZ flag has been around since 1902.
Every now and then someone tries to start a movement to get the flag changed.
Then everyone disagrees on whether or not the flag should be changed and if it was changed, what the new design would be.
Recently the New Zealand Herald started a new campaign to change the flag.
A TV presenter asked the prime minister about the issue and asked him to draw the flag design he preferred.
Someone then bought his drawing on an internet auction site for $10,150.
And that was Stick News for Friday the 19th of February.
Kia
Do you think the flag should be changed?
Get out of my way! I'm late for work!
SN
My father died for that flag!
Black?! That's so MORBID.
The fern reminds me of rugby. I hate rugby.
The
Is this the NZ or Australian Olympic team?
Why did you need my credit card number?
He he... Serves him right for being so useless + lazy...
Word of the Day
Today’s word is company.
You probably know that a company is a business.
But did you know this meaning of the word company?
n.
So if you say, I like Tom’s company, then, depending on the context, you could mean that you like his business, or you could mean that you like spending time with him or hanging out with him.
This is a line from today’s song:
The truth is I like my own company best
That means that he enjoys being by himself.
What's the difference between a cat and a comma?
A cat has claws at the end of its paws and a comma has its pause at the end of a clause
#745 Are you gay?
Step 1: Read Rob’s lines.
Step 2: Repeat Rob’s lines and talk to Sarah.
Rob
Sarah It’s a gay festival that was on in Auckland.
Rob Are you gay?
Sarah No, I just like free festivals.
Rob You didn’t have to be gay to go?
Sarah No, I don’t think so. Anyway, how could they tell? Make you walk through a gay detector on the way in
Rob How was it?
Sarah It was good. There were lots of people wearing really cool costumes. And the music was good. I just wanted to go and see Annie Crummer, actually. I really like her. And she was awesome.
For Today - Netherworld Dancing Toys - Lyrics
If you told me this time last year
That I would feel like I do now
Well, I wouldn't have believed you
It's not just a question
Of my being alone
The truth is I like my own company best
If the truth is to be known
I didn't realize, babe, how much I cared
All I want to do is to be with you
And everything else seems unimportant compared
For today
I remember your smile
For today
I remember your smile
It's been a hot summer now
But there's a hole in my well-being
So big you could drive a truck right through
I think you should know that you are the one
Who could probably fill it for good.
For today
I remember your smile
For today
I remember your smile
