#1297 Get Him To The Greek, Rock Music Personified, Giant Protest Cake, Cunning

Show 1297 Tuesday 7 September
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show. Today’s movie is called Get Him To The Greek which is an American comedy that was released earlier this year.

In this movie a guy called Aaron who works for a record company in America has to go and pick up a rock star called Aldous Snow who’s in London. And he has to bring him back to America in time for his concert which is being held at a place called the Greek Theatre, hence the name Get Him To The Greek.

Aaron’s boss says to him: I want you to go to London and pick him up and bring him back here for the show at the Greek. Can you handle it?
And Aaron says: Definitely.

* At :37 in trailer.

But it turns out to be quite difficult because Aldous Snow is rather crazy and loves partying.

As Aaron says: He is rock music personified.

Personify has a couple of meanings.

It means: to show or think of an object, quality etc. as a person.

For example in Stick News yesterday, a vuvuzela was personified.

Personify also means: to be an example of a quality or characteristic, or to have a lot of it.

And the example here is: He is kindness personified.

You could try making an example with The Daily English Show.
The Daily English Show is _____ insert noun here - whatever quality you think the show has - personified.

A protest group in Germany is campaigning against a sand quarry so they decided to bake a giant cake.
They used 100 kg of flour to make the cake which was 1.5 metres long and weighed 280kg.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 7th of September.
Kia ora.

How about a march?
Or an online petition …
Let’s make a cake!

So the plan is to let the workers stuff themselves so they can’t move?
How about we add a few drops of poison to the icing …

Word of the Day

Today’s word is cunning.

On Friday’s show we talked about the word scam and I saw a story the other day with the headline: Couple lose $15,000 in cunning car scam.

What does cunning mean?

It says here: (disapproving) able to get what you want in a clever way, especially by tricking or deceiving sb.

Whenever I hear the word cunning, I think of this quote from a TV program called Blackadder:
I have come up with a plan so cunning you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel.
