#1227 Mandarin/e, StoryCorps, Facebook Movie, Shoulder, 80th Birthday

Show 1227 Wednesday 30 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

I saw another sign outside the vegetable shop up the road which I thought had a spelling mistake on it.

They spelt mandarin with an e on the end. But I looked it up and apparently it can be spelt with or without an e.

The site I recommend today is called Story Corps.

Story Corps is an organization that records American people’s stories.
I think it’s a great idea – and it’s an excellent site for listening practice if you’re studying English.
You could just enjoy listening to them, or you could try transcribing them, or you could listen to them in a class or a study group and discuss them.

STICK NEWS

Facebook is the biggest social networking site in the world.
The site was founded in 2004 by four guys in America.
According to Wikipedia, since then there’s been “internal conflicts and differences of opinion”.
And one of the guy’s “departure from Facebook was the subject of subsequent legal action”.
The movie follows the drama of the friends falling out and is scheduled for release in
October.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 30th of June.
Kia ora.

Holy smoke... he's doubled in size since high school!

I'll get you for this, you bastard!
Fine... unfriend me then. Whatevs!

Mark... he's suing us.
Oh crap.

A movie about Facebook? Oh puh-lease. Snoozefest alert.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is shoulder.

This is a shoulder.

And this is a sign that I saw near my house last week.

Obviously the sign isn’t referring to a body part. And you can probably guess that shoulder means edge of the road.

It says here: AmE an area of ground at the side of a road where vehicles can stop in an emergency.

Step 1: Repeat Kevin’s lines.
Step 2: Read Kevin’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Kevin How was your weekend?

Sarah Good. Pretty busy. I went to a party on Sunday.

Kevin Whose party was it?

Sarah It was my grandmother’s 80th.

Kevin Cool. Did lots of people turn up?

Sarah Yeah. There were heaps. More than a hundred.

Kevin Wow! She must be popular.

Sarah Yeah, she is. She’s a really nice person, so she has heaps of friends.

Kevin Where was the party?

Sarah It was at her church. Well, not inside the actual church, but they have a community centre out the back.

#1226 Sign Language, NZ Prison Smoking Ban, Two Peas In A Pod

Show 1226 Tuesday 29 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Day by day more teams are leaving the World Cup in South Africa. And very soon Paraguay will be packing their bags, and I’m very much looking forward to that.

Today we’re studying a short film called Sign Language.

It’s about a guy who has a job holding up advertising signs in London, England. He calls himself a board guy. And his fancy job title is: static outdoor information technician.

And this is his last day on the job because he has been promoted.
In the movie he talks about his job and what he likes about it … and he describes his fellow board guys. He says one guy called Harry is a joker.

He’s always larking around.

To lark means to behave in a playful and mischievous way.

That’s not a word that I often hear in New Zealand. And another word that I’m not very familiar with is high jinks. It says in my dictionary that the word high jinks is old-fashioned and informal. It means lively and excited behaviour.

In the movie Ben says that his workmate must be planning some high jinks.

He says two of his other workmates, Chris and Steve, are: completely inseparable, two peas in a pod.

Two peas in a pod, or as alike as two peas in a pod, is a phrase which means that two things are very similar … like two peas in a pod.

Do you have a brother or a sister? And if so, are you two peas in a pod … or are you apples and oranges or chalk and cheese.

STICK NEWS

According to news reports, about two thirds of prisoners in New Zealand smoke cigarettes.
But from next year, they’ll all be forced to give up.
The government says it’s introducing the ban for health and safety reasons as well as the possibility of legal action.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 29th of June.
Kia ora.

This place sucks.
At least we have ciggies, bro.
gasp!

I PAID YOU FOUR CIGARETTES!
BOLLOCKS!

He he he...the sweet smell of a secondhand smoke lawsuit...

Word of the Day

Today’s word is patch.

British English, informal, an area that sb works in, knows well or comes from

In today’s movie Ben says that he started work outside of London. And then he says:

And then my dad retired, passed his patch on to me.

conversations with sarah
#781 That’s a bit harsh

Step 1: Repeat Andy’s lines.
Step 2: Read Andy’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Andy That’s a bit harsh.

Sarah Banning smoking in prisons?

Andy Yeah, their lives are crap enough already.

Sarah Yeah, but … they deserve it. They’re in prison.

Andy And won’t it cause riots?

Sarah Nah, I don’t reckon. They’ll get over it. Just keep them locked up until the withdrawal symptoms disappear.

Andy So you think prisoners should be treated horribly?

Sarah No, not horribly. I mean, I think they should be given healthy food, sunshine, exercise, a clean cell … but not cigarettes.

Sign Language - transcript

Yeah, my work place is wonderful and I want to share it.
My name is Ben. I am a static outdoor information technician – a board guy.
I’ve been doing it for about 15 years, ah, but I’ve just been promoted. So today is my last day.
London is the most exciting city in the world and I’m in the heart of it. Started out in the provinces, learning the trade, get the technique down. Worked the night shift for a few years. And then my dad retired, passed his patch on to me. But I had to earn it, really. This is Granddad’s pole actually.
Ah, my workmates are amazing. That’s Harry, he’s a joker. He’s always larking around. You know last year he held his sign upside down all day, just for a laugh.
You alright, Harry? Must be planning some high jinks.
Then there’s Chris, Steve, completely inseparable, two peas in a pod.
That’s Alex, work experience, degree in urban semiotics. Still got lots to learn though.
Then there’s Anya. She only started last month. You can tell she really gets it though. Terrible condition those flyerers (?) I wish I could help. She’s non-union though, so I can’t talk to her.

Yeah, hi Dad. Yeah, hi. No, ah, new post … first day new post starts tomorrow. Yeah, I am excited. Look, Dad, I’m at work. Ah, yeah, can I call you back? Yeah, bye.
Don’t get me wrong, the promotion is great. You know, It’s an honour to be recognized, Dad's over the moon.
It’s just that, this … place… You know we’re on a 12th century road surrounded by 19th century buildings - they’re works of art. Beneath us, there’s an underground river. There’s so much community here, so much life. And most people don’t see past the neon. This job teaches you about things like that.
You know I’m here to point out less obvious things. From the ruts of Oxford Street to open ways Thomas Hardy, 1872.
There’s so much beauty, you know, so much opportunity, right under our noses. We shouldn’t just ignore it.

We’ll that’s it. Shift over. Thought the guys might give me a send off or something. I guess they’re too busy. Oh well.

Yeah, it’s not too bad. Not so many people as before, but, I still (?) Mondays.
Off to work.

#1225 TDES In Hebrew, YouTube Vs Viacom, Sarah On Google Street View

Show 1225 Monday 28 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

I hope you had a good weekend.

I have some great news. A new site has been started for translations of The Daily English Show transcripts into Hebrew.

So that is very cool – and thank you so much to the people involved.

In case you didn’t know, there are many sites that people have made to post translations of some of the shows.

So far we have:

Japanese
German
Italian
Korean
Russian
Bulgarian
Spanish
Ukrainian
Polish
And now Hebrew.

Translating transcripts is one good way to study. And if you start a site for scripts in your language, please let us know so we can link to it from our site.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today YouTube has won its battle with Viacom.

Viacom is one of the world’s largest media companies.
In 2007 they sued YouTube for copyright infringement.
They said YouTube knowingly allowed offending content to remain on its site.
Last week the lawsuit was rejected.
The judge said that Google was protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
Viacom said it would appeal the decision.

And that was Stick News for Monday 28th June.
Kia ora.

Let's sue them!

Shouldn't we delete these videos, Chad?
No way, dude. They're making us famous!

Sarah No, in Japan. It was near my old place in Kutchan.

Cody How did you find it? Did someone tell you?

Sarah Yeah.

Cody Wow, out of it. Were you doing anything dodgy?

Sarah No. I was just walking down the street.

Cody Do you remember seeing the camera?

Sarah No, I don’t. That’s the weird thing. I’ve seen them in other places, but I don’t remember seeing one there.

#1224 Mystery Plant Salad

Show 1224 Sunday 27 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

At the end of last year I went to a festival in Auckland and someone gave me a little plant.

I took it home and transferred it to a bigger pot. It grew into a huge plant.

The person who gave it to me said that it was edible, so I decided to make a big salad.

I put the leaves in a salad spinner and washed them and spun them.

Then I cut up some tomatoes.

And added balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper.

It wasn’t the tastiest salad I’ve ever had … and I still have no idea what the plant was called.

#1223 Queens Wharf On Anzac Day

Show 1223 Saturday 26 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Queens Wharf is a concrete wharf in Auckland, New Zealand with a few old cargo sheds on it.

Apparently it’s going to be developed and opened in time for the Rugby World Cup next year.

But people have been arguing about exactly what should be done with it. Whether or not the sheds should be pulled down and whether or not they should make a cruise ship terminal.

Anyway, on Anzac Day this year, they opened the wharf to the public, so we decided to go and check it out.

There was a lot going on, like: face painting, balloons, a bouncy castle, a rowing competition, dancing, ball throwing.

There was some kind of rugby mascot hugging kids. And you could pose with a cardboard world cup and team jersey of your choice. I chose Tonga.

The sheds were also open for people to walk through. There wasn’t much going on inside the sheds.

#1222 Codeine Road By Greg Fleming, Australia’s PM, Hui, Robert Green Virus

Show 1222 Friday 25 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying Codeine Road which is a song by an Auckland musician called Greg Fleming.

I listened to him being interviewed on a podcast last week and then I went and checked out his music on YouTube and I really like the song Codeine Road.

He’s just released an album and this is one of the songs from it.

The song is about a famous street in Auckland called Karangahape Road which is commonly known as K Road.

As it says in Wikipedia, K Road is known for cafes, boutique shops, nightlife and for once having been one of the main red light districts of the city.

I think the song’s about a guy who’s walking down K Road observing what’s going on and the people he sees – including alcoholics and prostitutes.

He sees one old guy:

Stop in at the shop
Spend all the money he got
on red, red wine and a video

Codeine is a kind of drug which can be used as a recreational drug, so I guess that’s a reference to the dodgy nightlife on K Road.

This line is repeated several times:

It’ll put the fear of God in you

Put the fear of God into somebody is an idiom which means: to make sb very frightened, especially in order to make them do sth.

So I think he’s saying that K Road can be a scary place.

STICK NEWS

Julia Gillard was born in Wales in 1961.
Five years later her family migrated to Australia.
Julia became a lawyer and worked in industrial law.
In 1998, she became a member of parliament and nine years later became the first female deputy prime minister of Australia.
Yesterday, she became the prime minister.

And that was Stick News for Friday 25th June.
Kia ora.

They can't fire you for that! Let's sue the bastards!
OK

I will do everything in my power to make you proud.

Deputy PM! Darling! Time for a new hairstyle!

Bye Kev!
sniff!

Word of the Day

Today's word is hui.

A hui is a meeting or gathering or conference. It's a Māori word which is also
used in New Zealand English. When you see the word hui in an English newspaper in New Zealand, they're usually talking about a formal meeting at a marae.

The other day I saw a billboard in Auckland which was advertising flights and
it said: Get to the hui without the hikoi.

Hikoi is another Māori word that's also used in New Zealand English.

As it says in Wikipedia, a hikoi is: a protest march or parade, usually implying a long journey taking days or weeks.
So this billboard is saying that instead of walking for a long time to get to the meeting, you should fly.

#779 Should I avoid going there?

Step 1: Repeat Olivia’s lines.
Step 2: Read Olivia’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Olivia Is K Road a really dangerous place?

Sarah No, not really. It’s just … it can be kind of dodgy, I guess …

Olivia Should I avoid going there?

Sarah No, no, you don’t have to avoid it. There are some cool cafes and bars there. And clothes shops … And if you like dancing, you can go there and dance all night.

Olivia What’s your favourite street in Auckland?

Sarah My favourite street? Hmm … good question. Definitely not the street I live on now, that’s for sure. Yeah, I don’t know, I’d have to think about it.

Codeine Road by Greg Fleming - Lyrics

Put the fear of God as you hop, skip skip and jump, put the fear of God in you.
Same old man you know, out taking a stroll.
He might be the king of rock’n’roll, that’s the way it goes, all the way down Codeine Road.
Stop in at the shop.
Spend all the money he got on red red wine and a video.
A shot to go, the whole way down Codeine Road.
She’s sitting there, talking on the phone.
I take a chair, she take a car and go go go!
Codeine Road.
There’s little boy blue he’s out on his own too.
Lord, he ain’t got a clue, just what he’d do if they closed Codeine Road.
There’s little boy blue, hey look, there’s me and you down Codeine Road.
Hey don’t make no fuss, just find someone you can trust down Codeine Road.
You got the same old face, in the same old place Codeine Road.
It’ll put the fear of God in you.
It’ll put the fear of God in you.
It’ll put the fear of God in you.
It’ll put the fear of God in you.

#1221 All Whites, G8 Summit Canada, Truant, Wagging School, Nark

Show 1221 Thursday 24 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Early tomorrow morning New Zealand time, New Zealand is playing Paraguay in the World Cup. The New Zealand team’s called the All Whites … so I’m wearing all white, to show my support. And I even bought an official supporters scarf.

As you may know, soccer isn’t a very big sport in New Zealand, so it’s quite exciting that New Zealand’s been doing pretty well at the World Cup.

The video we’re studying today is an interview with one of the players – Mark Paston – I think that’s how you pronounce his surname.

They were talking to him after the Italy game, and he said: Yeah, it’s pretty crazy and not much sleep last night. And: A bit tired this morning, but, yeah, over the moon.

Over the moon is an idiom which means: extremely happy and excited.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora, in Stick News today the G8 summit is about to start in Canada.

Every year, the leaders of eight countries have a meeting.
They call themselves the G8.
The summit starts tomorrow and will last for two days.
This theme this year is: Recovery and New Beginning.

And that was Stick News for Thursday the 24th of April.
Kia ora.

Sorry, members only.

Hey Barack! Check out my G8 tattoo!
Wicked! We should have a secret handshake too!

Our government has grave concerns regarding...
Mr. President, they're leading 1-0!

Word of the Day

Today’s word is truant.

I saw this sign in a supermarket last week.

It says:
TRUANT FREE SHOP
This shop will not serve school aged children during school hours without an authorized permission slip from their school

I’d never seen a sign like that before. And I think it’s probably quite a good idea.

Do you know what a truant is?

a child who stays away from school without permission

And there are a few different verbs to describe this activity. In New Zealand we say wag.

For example:

Tom wasn’t in class today. Is he sick?
No, he’s probably wagging.

Kate Did you ever get caught?

Sarah Only once.

Kate Did a teacher see you?

Sarah No. I think somebody narked on us.

Kate Did you get in trouble?

Sarah Yeah, I got a detention - a B detention. That was a serious one at my school. They had A detentions and B detentions.
