Intro

Hi, I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show. On the show today – a birth and a death.
You’ve probably heard that The Crocodile Hunter has died.
Steve Irwin died when he was stabbed by a stingray.
conversations with sarah is about that.
And today in Japan Princess Kiko had a baby boy. She had the boy by caesarean. More about that in STICK NEWS.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora. In Stick News today, Japan’s Princess Kiko has given birth to a son. The baby boy is now the third in line to the throne.

Japan’s current Emperor is Emperor Akihito. He has been the emperor since 1989. Akihito and his wife Michiko have three children: 2 boys and a girl.
Naruhito married Masako and they have a daughter Aiko who is now 4.
Fumihito married Kiko. They have two daughters – plus the new baby boy.
And Sayako gave up being a princess a few years ago when she decided to marry a commoner.
Before the latest addition to “the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world”, there was a lot of stress about the lack of male babies.
Only men are supposed head the monarchy. But some people think the law should be changed to allow female leaders.
When the government proposed a law change recently, polls showed 70 percent were in favor of the change.
But with today’s birth, it’s now expected that people won’t be in such a hurry to change the law.

Kiko’s baby was born by caesarean section after pregnancy complications. The baby is said to be healthy. And his name hasn’t yet been announced. That was Stick News for Wednesday the 6th of September.
Kia Ora.

conversations with sarah
# 82 What do you call it in English?

Sarah talks to Aiko about the news that Steve Irwin died.
Step 1: Repeat Aiko’s lines.
Step 2: Read Aiko’s lines on the screen and talk to Sarah.

Aiko Did you hear that The Crocodile Hunter died?

Sarah Mmm ... yeah – that was a shock wasn’t it!

Aiko He was attacked by a fish wasn’t he ... What do you call it in English?

Sarah A stingray. Yeah, the stingray stabbed him in the chest. He was filming for a TV show at the time I think.

Aiko I wonder why the stingray stabbed him ...

Sarah I read that he accidentally swam to close, and the stingray felt threatened ...

Aiko Is it common? To die like that?

Sarah I don’t know ... I don’t think so ... I’ve never, I’ve never heard of it before. He was only 44 – it’s sad for his wife and kids.

Aiko Oh, did he have kids?

Sarah Yeah, an eight-year-old and a two-year-old I think.
