#1255 Inception, Strictly Speaking, Naked Cowboy Vs Naked Cowgirl, Out

Show 1255 Tuesday 27 July
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a movie that everyone seems to be talking about. It’s called Inception.
The world premiere was in London on the 13th of July.

It’s an American science fiction action film which was written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.

Some people seem to be a bit confused by the plot, so it’s the kind of movie that I’d probably recommend watching in your native language first, and then watching it again in English, once you understand the plot.

The move is about dreams. It’s about a guy who “enters the dreams of others to obtain information that is otherwise inaccessible.”

In the trailer, the main character explains what he does like this: We create the world of the dream. We bring the subject into that dream and they fill it with their secrets.

Then a girl says to him: Then you break in and steal it?

And he says: Well, it’s not, strictly speaking, legal.

Strictly speaking is an idiom which means: if you are using words or rules in their exact or correct sense.

And one of the examples here is: Strictly speaking, the book is not a novel, but a short story.

And with the law, when something’s not clear, when there’s a grey area, you might use the expression strictly speaking.

You might say something like: Strictly speaking it’s not 100% legal, but it’s a grey area.

Kia ora in Stick News today the Naked Cowboy is suing the Naked Cowgirl.

The Naked Cowboy is a famous American busker who performs in Times Square in New York City.
The Naked Cowboy has trademarked his character.
People who want to become a naked cowboy or cowgirl have to get permission and pay the original Naked Cowboy franchise fees.
He’s now suing a woman who has been performing as The Naked Cowgirl for the last two years without paying fees.
The Naked Cowboy’s lawyer says the woman is confusing tourists and destroying the brand.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 27th of July.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is inception.

inception noun (formal) the start of an institution, an organization, etc.

For example: The club has grown rapidly since its inception in 1990.

But in the movie, inception means the start of something, but not an organization. It means: to plant an idea in a target's subconscious.

#801 The dream’s collapsing

Step 1: Repeat Arthur’s lines.
Step 2: Read Arthur’s lines and talk to Cobb.

Trailer = 1:49

Arthur The dream’s collapsing.

Cobb I have it under control.

Arthur I’d hate to see out of control.
