Show 1255 Tuesday 27 July
Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today we’re studying a movie that everyone seems to be talking about. It’s called Inception.
The world premiere was in London on the 13th of July.
It’s an American science fiction action film which was written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Some people seem to be a bit confused by the plot, so it’s the kind of movie that I’d probably recommend watching in your native language first, and then watching it again in English, once you understand the plot.
The move is about dreams. It’s about a guy who “enters the dreams of others to obtain information that is otherwise inaccessible.”
In the trailer, the main character explains what he does like this: We create the world of the dream. We bring the subject into that dream and they fill it with their secrets.
Then a girl says to him: Then you break in and steal it?
And he says: Well, it’s not, strictly speaking, legal.
Strictly speaking is an idiom which means: if you are using words or rules in their exact or correct sense.
And one of the examples here is: Strictly speaking, the book is not a novel, but a short story.
And with the law, when something’s not clear, when there’s a grey area, you might use the expression strictly speaking.
You might say something like: Strictly speaking it’s not 100% legal, but it’s a grey area.

Word of the Day
Today’s word is inception.
inception noun (formal) the start of an institution, an organization, etc.
For example: The club has grown rapidly since its inception in 1990.
But in the movie, inception means the start of something, but not an organization. It means: to plant an idea in a target's subconscious.

Arthur The dream’s collapsing.
Cobb I have it under control.
Arthur I’d hate to see out of control.
