Show 615 Friday 18 January

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

The song I recommend to study today is called Ten Guitars. This is a really famous song in New Zealand. I think almost everyone in New Zealand has heard of this song. It’s not from my generation it’s from the 60’s – but I heard it when I was growing up and I always assumed it was an old New Zealand folk song. And then a while back I looked it up and I was surprised to find that it’s not a New Zealand song after all. It’s by a British-American guy who was born in India and has a German name.

His birth name was Arnold George Dorsey and he adopted the name Engelbert Humperdinck after a German opera composer.

He’s now 71 and he still performs. I was just checking out his website, englebert.com and he has quite a busy tour schedule.

Here are a couple of his well known songs that you might have heard:

This one’s called The Last Waltz:

I had the last waltz with you

Two lonely people together

And this one is called Quando, Quando, Quando:

When will you say yes to me

Tell me quando quando quando

But Ten Guitars is not one of his famous songs and I think the only country where it’s famous, is in New Zealand. And maybe some of the countries near New Zealand too – in the Pacific Islands.

Apparently Ten Guitars was on the other side of the Release Me record. And for some reason it became famous in New Zealand.

It’s a pretty simple song - these are the words to the chorus:

Oh, dance, dance, dance to my ten guitars

And very soon you know just where you are

Through the eyes of love you see a thousand stars

When you dance, dance, dance, to my ten guitars

So as I said, everyone in NZ knows this song. If you don’t believe me, search on YouTube and you’ll find lots of random people singing it in bars or sitting in their lounge at home.

So if you’re planning on going to NZ, I think it’s a good song to learn and you can sing along with the locals.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today, the Halifax regional council in Canada is planning to open up the taxi industry and the Taxi Drivers Association is not happy.

In Halifax, Nova Scotia there are currently 610 licensed taxi drivers. But the council is planning to remove licensing limits and geographical zones.
The president of Halifax Taxi Drivers Association says they’re not happy about the plans.
He says the move will make it harder for taxi drivers to make a living.
"People are led to believe that more cars on the road are going to provide you with a better service. That's not necessarily the case, because people will concentrate on the areas where they think there's the most business and they leave the suburbs alone."
He says the association is now talking to the council but if things don’t go their way, more drastic measures may be taken.

And that was Stick News for Friday the 18th of January.

THE SNOW REPORT
at Loaf Lounge

Today I’m going to tell you how to get to Loaf Lounge.
If you’re taking the Kutchan Night Go bus from Hirafu, you should get off at the Takiguchi Sports stop.
Then cross the street and turn right.
You’ll go past a shop called Cocoroya.
And a shop called Boom.
And then just past this place, だるまや turn left.
Walk straight and you’ll go past this shop. What is this shop? I’ve never seen it before. What do they sell? Ahhh, looks like craft stuff.
Anyway, keep going. Go past the reindeer ... Why do they have christmas decorations? It’s like January. Weird.
Anyway, keep going. Keep going. And then you’ll see a green building on the corner. This is Loaf Lounge.

friday joke

I found the joke here.

A passenger in a taxi tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him something. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a shop window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab, then the driver said, "Please, don't ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me."The passenger, who was also frightened, apologized and said she didn't realize that a tap on the shoulder could frighten him so much.
Then the driver replied, "No, I'm sorry, it's really not your fault at all. Today is myfirst day driving a cab. For the last 25 years I have been driving a hearse.”

conversations with sarah
#373 Why is he singing in Italian?

Step 1: Repeat Bob’s lines.
Step 2: Read Bob’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Bob What does quando, quando, quando mean?

Sarah When, when, when.

Bob In what language?

Sarah Italian.

Bob Why is he singing in Italian?

Sarah Um, it’s just that one word that’s in Italian, the rest of it’s in English. It was originally an Italian song and somebody translated it into English .

Ten Guitars

I have a band of men and all they do is play for me
They come from miles around to hear them play a melody
Beneath the stars my ten guitars will play a song for you
And if you're with the one you love this is what you do

Oh, dance, dance, dance to my ten guitars
And very soon you know just where you are
Through the eyes of love you see a thousand stars
When you dance, dance, dance, to my ten guitars

Guitars are made for love my band of men will always say
So give each one a pretty girl and they will start to play
Beneath the stars my ten guitars will play a song for you
And if you're with the one you love this is what to do

Oh, dance, dance, dance to my ten guitars
And very soon you know just where you are
Through the eyes of love you see a thousand stars
When you dance, dance, dance, to my ten guitars
Ooh, let me tell you now
Dance, dance, dance to my ten guitars
Hm, come on, everybody,
Dance dance dance to my ten guitars
