#1121 Two Cars, One Night, As If, Doubt It, Nick, One-hit Wonders

Show 1121 Thursdsay 10 December
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi I'm Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we're studying a short film called Two Cars, One Night. This is a New Zealand movie that came out in 2003 (I accidentally said 2002). And I'd heard a lot about it and then I finally saw it when it was featured on the YouTube homepage the other day.

And I love it. I think it's a great story and the acting is brilliant. It's the story of a friendship between some kids. And I think it's so typical of how kids speak to each other and how they relate.

At the start a boy wants to speak to a girl and so he starts out by saying: Hey, don't look over here. Your ugly face might damage my paintwork.

And they insult each other for a bit, but by the end they've become friends.

Some of the words they use to insult each other are: egg, dick and baby.

The girl says to the boy: Hey dick, I mean, hey boy. Hey, look over here.

And after she gives him the fingers, he says: Grow up, you baby.

A bit later the boy says to her: Probably can't even drive anyway.

Of course, they both are not supposed to drive because they're kids, but the boy is trying to show off and he says that he can drive his parents' car.

But the girl says to him: As if you can, egg.

As if means: it's very unlikely, or I don't believe ...

Later on the boy says that he's 16 when he is obviously much younger, he's actually nine.
And she says: As if, which means: No, you're not, or: I don't believe you.

A similar expression is: Doubt it.

When the boy says that he's allowed to drive, she says: Doubt it.

Of course I'm from New Zealand so I can easily understand everything they're saying.
But I know that it might be hard for people who've never been to New Zealand and I'm not actually sure which expressions are only used in New Zealand.
So after you've watched the movie, go and read the script. And then, if there's anything you don't understand, please ask in the comments.
I'd also be really interested to hear from native English speakers who aren't from New Zealand. Are there any words or expressions in the film that you've never heard before?

STICK NEWS

Wikipedia says: A one-hit wonder is a person or act known mainly for only a single success. The term is most often used to describe music performers with only one hit single.
A magazine called Billboard has just published a list of the top one-hit wonders of the last decade.
Coming in at number one was Daniel Powter who released a popular song in 2006 called Bad Day.

And that was Stick News for Thursday the 10th of December.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today's word is: nick.

Nick is an informal word which means: to steal sth. Another informal word for nick is: pinch.

In the movie the boy asks if he can have a look at the girl's ring and she says:
OK, but you better not nick it.
