#1218 The Return Of The Daily English Show

Show 1218 Monday 21 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome back to The Daily English Show. Long time no see!

This is the first show back from our break, which turned out to be a lot longer than we had planned.

Before our break, I said we’d be back in May, and it’s now June. So what happened?

Well, everything was going well, until one day we got a knock at our door – which is very strange in an apartment building because no one usually knocks on the door – and a guy said - through the door, because I wouldn’t let him in – that he’d bought our apartment and he wanted us to move out as soon as possible.

So, that was a bit of a shock. We were really enjoying living there and feeling quite settled … but, oh well, that’s life. So we had to look for a place to live and move and set up the studio again … which all takes time, of course.

But we found a place. And this is it … welcome to our new studio.

We were living right in the centre of Auckland … but we’re now living in South Auckland – right at the bottom of South Auckland actually. Where we’re living now is part of a district called Papakura which is in the Auckland metropolitan area. But it all changes from October when all the cities in the Auckland area will join together to become one super city - and then we’ll be living in a ward, I think, called Manurewa-Papakura.

Anyway, life is good here in South Auckland. It’s perhaps not quite as exciting as living in the centre of the city … but the rent is cheaper which helps the financial side of things.

And speaking of the business side of things … that’s what we originally took the break to work on. And that’s been going well. We have set up a company in New Zealand – studio tdes limited – which turned out to be pretty easy actually, kind of like opening a Twitter account, except you have to pay. This is our certificate of incorporation.

And we also applied for non-profit status … and that got approved, so now we are officially a charitable entity.

And later I’ll tell you more about what we’re doing to try to get funding to continue making the show.

Today you may have noticed a new addition to our set – yes, the yellow couch is back.

It’s not the same couch of course … and, ah, strictly speaking, it’s not actually a yellow couch, it more of a grey couch with a piece of yellow material over it. But, well, beggars can’t be choosers and I’m just happy we have a couch again.

And it’s great to be back. I’m really happy to be making the show again … and I’m really happy that lots of people missed us. Thank you to everyone who took the time to write and comment to say that they missed us and ask us where we were. Including an email from Andre in Belguim, who wrote a couple of weeks ago asking what was going one, and said:

I'm waiting for tdes. It's so interesting and funny. Really, I enjoy your show, you are a kind of member of my family.

That’s so sweet … thank you. And hopefully I’ve just answered your question about where we were.

I’m sorry we were gone for so long. But thank you for your patience and thank you for watching today.

We’ll be back with a regular show tomorrow. See you then.

Bye!
