#1303 NZ Local Elections, Pub Advice For Unemployed, Dole Vs Doll

Show 1303 Monday 13 September
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

In New Zealand we have local elections coming up. Election day is on the 9th of October.
And in Auckland it’ll be the first election for the new supercity, which is the new city they’ve made by joining several cities together.

So we thought we’d interview one of the candidates. His name is Len Brown and he’s currently the mayor of Manukau City which is close to where we are here in South Auckland.

We’re interviewing him at the end of this month, September, and if everything goes to plan, he’ll be on the show on Monday the 4th of October. So if you have any suggestions for questions to ask him, please leave a comment or send us an email:

Reuters reported a Berlin pub has set up an advice desk to help the long-term unemployed get back on their feet.
The pub’s boss said it made sense because so many people in the area were on unemployment benefits.
The advice desk operates between 2 and 5 pm on Fridays and is run by two social workers.

And that was Stick News for Monday the 13th of September.
Kia ora.

My life sucks. What should I do?
Have another beer.

Damn punters are always running out of money!

And when you get a job, invite all your new co-workers to the pub to celebrate!

Step 1: Repeat Cristina's lines.
Step 2: Read Cristina's lines and talk to Sarah.

Cristina Do you have the unemployment benefit in New Zealand?

Sarah Yeah, the dole.

Cristina The what?

Sarah The dole.

Cristina D-o-l-l?

Sarah No, d-o-l-e.

Cristina Oh, like … pineapples.

Sarah Yeah.

Cristina Does it have something to do with pineapples?

Sarah I don’t think so. To dole something out means to distribute something. So I think that’s probably where it came from.
