Show 1187 Friday 5 March
Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today’s song is called Serenade.
It’s by a band called The Naked And Famous. I’d never heard of them before, but I looked them up because they’re playing at a free concert here in Auckland on Sunday.
And I quite like this song, and I really like the video. In the video they’re playing with things like this.
So, what’s this song about? Well, I think it’s kind of a love song about someone who’s trying to get over someone, but he’s having difficulty because he still loves her.
You're screaming and you're fighting with your brain
These lines are towards the end of the song:
The crime of love was tried but you did not succeed
They’re playing with words here. This means, you tried having a relationship, but it wasn’t successful.
And they’re using a metaphor of a case being tried in court. In the song, they evaluate the relationship and say that it wasn’t a success, so the love itself was a kind of crime.
To try means, to make an attempt, as in, to try to make the relationship successful.
And try also means to investigate and decide (a case or issue) in a formal trial.
For example: The case was tried before a jury.
And the line it didn’t do you justice is continuing the crime metaphor. Justice means: the administration of the law or authority in maintaining this.
And do yourself justice is an idiom which means: perform as well as one is able.
So if the relationship didn’t do you justice, it means that it wasn’t good for you.
STICK NEWS
Kia ora in Stick News today a graduate student has invented an electronic shoe to help prevent older people from falling over.
According to CNN a 30-year-old graduate student has invented a high-tech shoe insole to help older people manage their balance.
The insole tracks a person's balance patterns using digital sensors.
The data is then transmitted to computers where it can be interpreted by doctors or patients.
The invention is still in the research-and-development phase, but the inventor said he expects it to become a consumer product within a few years.
And that was Stick News for Friday the 5th of March.
Kia ora .
It could be useful for drunk people too!
And if the computer gets the message that the person's about to fall, the computer will send a message to the closest air bag...
They'll be air bags inside all the walls?
Hmm... Yellow or red laces?
Word of the Day
Today’s word is shit.
This is a magazine called The Groove Guide which someone has just started delivering to our apartment building. And one of their sections is called: shit worth doing.
What does that mean?
Shit has many meanings.
It’s an exclamation. For example if you suddenly remember that you had an appointment two hours ago that you’ve forgotten about, you could say: Shit!
It’s also slang for faeces or excrement.
But in this case, it just means stuff.
So this page is full of stuff worth doing – they list events and other things that they recommend.
I think this is a fairly common way to use shit, in informal situations.
For example, someone might ring a friend and ask: Hey do you want go to the beach today?
And the reply might be: Nah, man, I can’t. I got heaps of shit I have to do at home.
Which day is stronger, Sunday or Monday?
Sunday. Monday is a weekday

Sarah Yeah, it was awesome, wasn’t it?

The Naked And Famous - Serenade - Lyrics
Oh darling I don't think this serenade
You're screaming and you're fighting with your brain
You're crying, you're crying, you're crying
This love, this love, this love
It's been a while since she had spoke to you
You're crying, you're crying, you're crying
This love, this love, this love,
You drank far too much wine
A dizzy spell to block out all the sunshine
Oh love listen to me, you got it hard but soon it will be easy
The crime of love was tried but you did not succeed
