#913 Future Job? Human Rights, Euthanasia

Show 913 Thursday 11 December
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

In The Acadia Report today, students were asked a variation of the question: What do you want to be when you grow up?
That is the version usually asked to kids, and kids will say: When I grow up I want to be a truck driver or a hairdresser … or whatever it is. And sometimes adults use that same structure in a joking way.

Usually the question for older people is something like: What do you want to do when you leave school or finish university? Or: What’s your ideal job?

The video I recommend today is a kind of summary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which is a pretty famous document. It was adopted by the UN 60 years ago, on the 10th of December 1948.

I recommend reading the actual document too – although it could be challenging, because there’s some difficult vocabulary.

For example: Article 14, number 1: Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.

asylum protection that a government gives to people who have left their own country, usually because they were in danger for political reasons

And to persecute someone means to treat them in a cruel or unfair way, especially because of their race, religion or political beliefs.

The Acadia Report

My favourite job, or what I plan on doing, is being a teacher. I’m in my last year of a bachelor of education program and I love working with kids and helping people, so that’s my plan.

I want to be a doctor in the future, so I’m studying very hard.

I want to be a United Nations officer, it’s my dream.

Favourite work, I teach speed drive.

After school I want to be a teacher because I’m in education right now and I love kids. And being in this program is making me really eager to be in the classroom and help kids learn and … be ready for life.

I really want to be a teacher because I really love kids and I really want to help them learn and become, ah, better adults.

After graduation I guess I want to either be a computer programmer or a writer.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today a 79-year-old woman in New Zealand had the words do not resuscitate tattooed on her chest.

Paula is a 79- year- old woman from Dunedin. The New Zealand Herald reported Paula belongs to a euthanasia group called EXIT and says she wants to die with dignity. A few years ago, Paula met a woman who had had the words do not resuscitate tattooed on her chest when she was 21. "I thought what a bloody good idea,” Paula said. "If I have a heart attack in the streets I do not want to be revived." Paula then decided to get her own tattoo. She said the tattoo is part of the campaign to change the law in New Zealand to allow people to choose when they died.

And that was Stick News for Thursday the 11th of December.
Kia Ora.

TDES Niseko Snow Report
in Kutchan

Today I took my camera to the gym and did a bit of filming on the way back. This is standing on an overbridge looking down at the railway tracks.
This is the overbridge.
This is standing under the bridge looking at a truck in front of a big building, I think it’s some kind of warehouse.
Still standing under the bridge, looking in a different direction.
This is looking towards the train station.
This is the main street of Kutchan.
And this is a new restaurant I discovered that has just opened. It looked really nice and I thought it was interesting that there was a macron over the n.
It was minus 1.2 degrees.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is arbitrary – this word appears many times in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

arbitrary adj. based on random choice or personal whim

For example, article 17, number 2: No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property.

I think that means that you can’t have your stuff randomly taken away from you by the government or somebody else. There has to be a good reason.

#912 Getting Fat In Winter, Monkey Smuggling, Washlet Toilet, Elf Yourself

Show 912 Wednesday 10 December
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s mistake comes from another blog entry on lang 8.
It’s about putting on weight during winter … which is something I think a lot of us can relate to.

I’ll read it to you.

It's cold in winter, so I eat so much unwittingly. My weight is getting up.(〒_〒) Now I'm looking like a panda. How to loose weight? Thank you!

A few mistakes to talk about here.

First: My weight is getting up.
Normally people say: I’m putting on weight.
Or: I’m gaining weight.
Or: I’m getting fat.

Now I’m looking like a panda. That’s very cute … in Japan people sometimes say they look like Anpanman when they put on weight.
I’d probably say: Now I’m starting to look like a panda, or: Now I look like a panda.

And finally: How to lose weight?
Lose only has one o – this word is loose.

I would say: How can I lose weight?

The site I recommend today is called Elf Yourself.
You may have seen it before, I think it’s been around for a couple of years.
On this site, you can upload a picture of someone’s face and the site will automatically make a video of an elf dancing with the face that you uploaded. It doesn’t really have anything to do with learning English, but it’s fun.

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today a 28-year-old woman was caught smuggling a monkey into the United States. The woman hid the monkey under her top and pretended she was pregnant.

In November last year an American woman flew from Bangkok to California with a monkey under her top. She didn’t have a permit for the monkey and she didn’t declare it at customs. Instead she pretended to be pregnant and smuggled the monkey into the country. But she was caught. She has now been convicted of smuggling and will be sentenced in March next year. According to CNN, the conviction carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and up to three years of court supervision after release.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 10th of December.
Kia Ora.

TDES Niseko Snow Report
at MSK JR Apartment

Today I thought I’d show you one of the things I like most about my new apartment - the toilet.
This is the first time I’ve lived in a place with a washlet toilet. It’s awesome.
This is a pretty simple washlet toilet … but it has all the most important functions.
This button means stop. You can probably guess what these are for by looking at the pictures.
This is for the water strength. This is for nozzle direction. Water temperature. Seat temperature.
There are two power saving modes. And this button activates the odour remover. I have no idea how it works but it makes a mysterious buzzing sound.
And this button is for cleaning the nozzle.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is put.
To put on weight means to gain weight.
And there are many other phrasal verbs using the word put.

Here are some examples:

put sth away put sth back put sth behind you put sb down put sth down to sth put sth off put yourself out put somebody out

#567 I always put on weight in winter

Step 1: Repeat Kate’s lines.
Step 2: Read Kate’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Kate I always put on weight in winter.

Sarah Yeah, me too.

Kate Why is that?

Sarah Mmm, I think it’s because it’s cold so you don’t move as much.

Kate It can’t be just that.

Sarah Mmm. Maybe it’s cause winter’s kind of depressing so we eat and drink more to try and make ourselves feel better.

Kate Yeah, that sounds about right.
