#1227 Mandarin/e, StoryCorps, Facebook Movie, Shoulder, 80th Birthday

Show 1227 Wednesday 30 June
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

I saw another sign outside the vegetable shop up the road which I thought had a spelling mistake on it.

They spelt mandarin with an e on the end. But I looked it up and apparently it can be spelt with or without an e.

The site I recommend today is called Story Corps.

Story Corps is an organization that records American people’s stories.
I think it’s a great idea – and it’s an excellent site for listening practice if you’re studying English.
You could just enjoy listening to them, or you could try transcribing them, or you could listen to them in a class or a study group and discuss them.

STICK NEWS

Facebook is the biggest social networking site in the world.
The site was founded in 2004 by four guys in America.
According to Wikipedia, since then there’s been “internal conflicts and differences of opinion”.
And one of the guy’s “departure from Facebook was the subject of subsequent legal action”.
The movie follows the drama of the friends falling out and is scheduled for release in
October.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 30th of June.
Kia ora.

Holy smoke... he's doubled in size since high school!

I'll get you for this, you bastard!
Fine... unfriend me then. Whatevs!

Mark... he's suing us.
Oh crap.

A movie about Facebook? Oh puh-lease. Snoozefest alert.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is shoulder.

This is a shoulder.

And this is a sign that I saw near my house last week.

Obviously the sign isn’t referring to a body part. And you can probably guess that shoulder means edge of the road.

It says here: AmE an area of ground at the side of a road where vehicles can stop in an emergency.

#782 Whose party was it?

Step 1: Repeat Kevin’s lines.
Step 2: Read Kevin’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Kevin How was your weekend?

Sarah Good. Pretty busy. I went to a party on Sunday.

Kevin Whose party was it?

Sarah It was my grandmother’s 80th.

Kevin Cool. Did lots of people turn up?

Sarah Yeah. There were heaps. More than a hundred.

Kevin Wow! She must be popular.

Sarah Yeah, she is. She’s a really nice person, so she has heaps of friends.

Kevin Where was the party?

Sarah It was at her church. Well, not inside the actual church, but they have a community centre out the back.
