#1113 Apostrophes, The Whuffie Bank, Tiger Woods Crashes Car, Laceration

Show 1113 Wednesday 2 December
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s mistake comes from something called Coffee News. It’s a kind of free paper that I found in a shopping mall when I first got back to New Zealand.
There’s an job advertisement in here which says that there is an exciting opportunity which is: “Ideal for Students & Mother’s”.
The word mothers doesn’t need an apostrophe.

As I’m sure you probably know, apostrophes are for contractions – as in it’s which is short for it is.

Its a lovely day.

Apostrophes are also for possession.

Whose phone is this?
It's Sarah’s phone.

But apostrophes are not used for plurals.

I like turtles. No apostrophe there.

Ideal for students and mothers – no apostrophe.

Today I checked out a site called The Whuffie Bank. I thought it was an interesting idea for a site. You can enter in your twitter username and it tells you how high your online reputation is.
And I think the idea is that this reputation number could be turned into some kind of currency which you could actually use to buy things.
I'm not sure if it will actually take off, but anyway ...
At the moment, their top ranked person is Joseph Simmons. He's on of the guys from Run-D.M.C. which was a hip hop group. He had more than 800,000 whuffies.
As for me, I put in tdes and they said I had 7 whuffies.

STICK NEWS

Tiger Woods is a famous golfer. Wikipedia says he was the highest-paid professional athlete in 2008.
Last Friday at 2:30am, he went for a bit of a drive in his SUV.
But he didn't get far. Shortly after he started he crashed into a fire hydrant and then a tree.
He has now been charged with careless driving and fined $164.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 2nd of December.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is laceration. Apparently Tiger Woods was treated for facial lacerations.

So basically, Tiger Woods had cuts on his face.

conversations with sarah
#706 Why did Tiger crash his car?

Step 1: Repeat Mary's lines.
Step 2: Read Mary's lines and talk to Sarah.

Mary Why did Tiger Woods crash his car? Had he been drinking?
Sarah No apparently he had an argument with his wife and he was driving to try and get away from her or something.
Mary Is that what he said?
Sarah No, he hasn’t really said anything.
Mary So it’s just a rumour.
Sarah Yeah. It might not be true, of course. But why did she smash one of the windows with a golf club to rescue him? Why didn’t she just open one of the doors?
Mary Maybe none of the doors would open.
Sarah Mmm.
