Show 984 Monday 2 March
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.
Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show. Today’s guest is Hannah. She’s from Scotland and she’s been in Japan since September. Over the winter she’s been working and snowboarding here in Niseko – but before that she was in Tokyo teaching English and I asked her how that was.
Yeah, I loved it. Tokyo’s an amazing place. Really fun.
What do you enjoy about teaching?
I enjoy meeting the students and learning about, um, their culture and their, their lives in Japan. It’s really interesting for me.
STICK NEWS
Kia ora in Stick News today an Irish airline is considering charging passengers to pee.
According to Wikipedia, Ryanair is the third largest airline in Europe in terms of passenger numbers and the world's largest in terms of international passenger numbers. CNN reported the company has made no secret of its quest to boost revenue by any means possible. It charges for food and each bag checked into the hold is subject to a fee. The airline is now considering charging passengers to use the toilet on board its flights. A spokesperson said Ryanair is “always looking at ways of constantly lowering the costs of air travel and making it more affordable and easier for passengers to fly with us."
And that was Stick News for Monday the 2nd of March.
Kia ora.

with Hannah Ross
Step 1: Repeat Sarah’s lines.
Step 2: Read Sarah’s lines and talk to Hannah.
Sarah Are there many different dialects in Scotland?
Hannah In Scotland there’s … several different dialects. There’s a lot of different accents. Um, even in the town I grew up in, there’s several different accents within each different area. And then throughout the whole country, um, there’s a lot of different accents. A lot of people tell me I don’t sound very Scottish, but it’s because I think they presume a Scottish accent is just one, when there’s actually an awful lot.
Sarah How would you describe your accent?
Hannah I don’t think it’s really strong, but, um, it’s um … sometimes I can talk very quickly and we obviously pronounce our Rs a lot more than … even compared to England. Um, but, yeah, it’s quite, quite a neutral accent. I suppose it’s from central Scotland, so it’s not too strong. A Glasgow accent is much stronger or an accent from the highlands is really strong as well. But I think … it’s just, it’s just from where I’m from.
Sarah Can you teach me some Scottish English?
Hannah Well I think throughout Scotland we use wee, like w-e-e. It means small or younger. Like, um, do you want some of this? Can I just have a wee bit. Or: I’ve got a wee brother. We use that a lot. Um, we also say aye for yes. Um, yeah, that’s probably the main ones. And also we call lakes lochs. There’s no lakes in Scotland, only lochs.
Sarah How long are you going to stay in Japan?
Hannah I’m not really sure at the moment. I’m trying to decide. I might go back to Tokyo after the winter here, to teach some English, cause I really enjoyed it there. But, um, yeah, I’m trying to decide at the moment what to do.
Sarah Have you ever learnt any other languages?
Hannah At high school we learnt German and French. Um, so I’ve got some basic French that I learned from school and from living there. It’s quite basic. I also lived in Barcelona, so I picked up some Catalan as well.
Sarah What were you doing in Barcelona?
Hannah I was teaching English, last summer.
Sarah Were the students in Spain and in Japan different?
Hannah Very hard working in Japan and very enthusiastic. I was teaching children, though, in, in Spain, ah, which was really fun, lots of games and things. Whereas I was teaching university students in Japan and they were obviously much more focused and, and really eager to learn English, so it was great.
Sarah What did you study at university?
Hannah I studied fine art. Painting, print making and video.
Sarah What kind of video?
Hannah I worked with high definition video, um, and I was trying to combine my painting skills into video making. I did a lot of really still shots and lots of time-lapse. Um, and a lot of portraiture.
Sarah Are you planning on becoming a full-time artist?
Hannah Um, I don’t know. I want to do something creative, definitely. I’m not sure what yet. I’m just going to travel for a few years and make up my mind.
Sarah Do you make art while you’re travelling?
Hannah Yeah, I’ve got a little sketch book and I’ve got a video camera that I can take with me. And my laptop to make some work.
Sarah Have you made any videos in Niseko?
Hannah Not as yet, but, um, we’re going to, some, we’re going to make some, ah, some snowboarding movies … with my friends. But yeah, for definite, need to get out and make more work here.
