#915 Boots

Show 915 Saturday 13 December
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

The other day, I bought some new boots.
They are amazing.
Dry. Warm. Comfortable.
The greatest thing since sliced bread.
Let’s go for a walk.

Hmm. You can’t really see much apart from snow.
You can’t even see my amazing boots.

What’s this?
A drain.
Another drain.

A wall.
Another wall.
A blue wall.

Waiting for the lights. And crossing the road.
Not that you can really tell because the road is white too.

Oh, a pole. And a flag.
Road safety.

Black. What’s this?
Ah, a convenience store.

A post box.

These mushroom-type things are next to a park. I can’t play in the park, it’s full of snow.

What’s this? A black hole?
Ah, it’s a star.

I think I might go inside the post office. Hmm, what’s inside the post office?
Sellotape.
And a machine.
いらっしゃいませ (irrashaimase = welcome)
It can talk.

Waiting for the lights again. Green man. Excellent.

Now we’re getting into the centre of town, where we can see some designs on the footpaths.
And an orange wall.

A fire hydrant. And you can see my boots.
What amazing boots.

Something red and green … ah, the 100 yen shop.

Two orange cones.

A tree, with a name tag.

Some yellow steps. I wonder where they lead.

A wall and a lamppost.
Reminds me of Narnia.

I think I might check out the supermarket.
Hello trolleys.

I wonder if I can find anything interesting in the supermarket.

Mmm pasta.
Coffee.
Kagami mochi.

#914 Christmas Songs, Actor Slices Neck On Stage, Blunt, Santa Joke

Show 914 Friday 12 December
Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

It’s almost Christmas, so I thought I’d recommend a Christmas song to study today.

One of the Christmas songs that I really like is called: Santa Claus Is Back In Town by Elvis Presley.

It’s a bit different from the usual cheesy Christmas songs. And apparently some people thought it was rather shocking when it came out in 1957.

Here are some of the lyrics.

Well, it's Christmas time pretty baby And the snow is falling down Well you be a real good little girl Santa Claus is back in town Got no sleigh with reindeer No sack on my back You're gonna see me coming in a big black Cadillac

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today an actor in Austria sliced his neck open when he cut himself with what was supposed to be a blunt knife.

Mary Stuart is a play based on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. One of the characters in the play, Mortimer, commits suicide. On Saturday an actor called Daniel was playing the part of Mortimer in a production in Austria. The suicide scene was supposed to feature a blunt knife, but apparently, someone forgot to blunt the knife. After slicing his throat, Daniel collapsed on stage with blood spurting from his neck and the audience clapped. They didn’t realize he was acting until he failed to appear to take a bow at the end of the play. Daniel was taken to hospital, where he was given stitches and he returned to act in the play the next day. Police are now investigating the incident and haven’t ruled out the possibility of a conspiracy.

And that was Stick News for Friday the 12th of December.
Kia Ora.

TDES Niseko Snow Report
in Hirafu

The Daily English Show went up to the ski village today. We stopped in at the Niseko Safety Information Center and did an interview with one of the members of the Niseko Patrol team. That’ll be on Monday’s show.
We also went had a look at the Yurts. This is Niseko Yurt Village with flash. And without flash. This is Seicomart – otherwise known as the center of the universe in Hirafu.
And this is Australia House, the place where we had a coffee the other day.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is blunt.
lacking a sharp edge or point

This word is most commonly used to describe knives.
The opposite of blunt is sharp.
This knife is kind of blunt … which is good, it’s supposed to be blunt.
This knife is supposed to be sharp, but it’s also kind of blunt. I should sharpen it.

friday joke

Why did Santa put his bed into the fireplace?
Because he wanted to sleep like a log.
