#1271 Jake And Amir – Record Breaker, $200,000 Australian Election Bet, Nark, Hamilton

Show 1271 Thursday 12 August
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a Jake and Amir video called Record Breaker.

If you haven’t heard of Jake and Amir, you can go to jakeandamir.com and check them out. I first talked about them on the show on show #1001.

In this video, Amir is trying to break the world record for holding your breath because he wants to get in the Guinness Book of World Records.

And his friend Jake reluctantly helps him.

Just a bit of background on the characters in case you haven’t seen Jake and Amir before: Amir isn’t very bright and he often comes up with silly ideas and Jake ends up getting involved somehow because Amir tricked him into it or begged him or something.

This video starts with Jake and Amir looking at the camera. And Jake says:
OK, it’s recording.
Then Amir says: OK, well don’t go anywhere, cos I need a witness!
And Jake says: You said all I had to do was set up the camera.
And Amir says: Well, I need a witness.

So once again Jake has been tricked into being part of Amir’s silly plan.

Another thing about Amir is that he often gets words confused and at the end of this video he says, I browned out, when he means, I blacked out.

To black out means to lose consciousness for a short time.

And Amir holds his breath for so long that he blacks out.

STICK NEWS

The governing party of Australia is the Australian Labor Party.
The country is holding a federal election on the 21st of August.
And someone has bet $200,000 that Labor will win the election.
If Labor wins, the punter will make $100,000.

And that was Stick News for Thursday 12th August.
Kia ora.

Power... Goooooooold....

Ugh... I'm so hungover.
So you don't remember anything you did last night?

gasp!
What?! I could lose everything!
hehe
You'd better start campaigning.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is nark.

a person who is friendly with criminals and who gives the police information about them

This word can also be used in other situations. It’s not just giving the police information, it’s basically a person who informs the authorities. So it could be parents or teachers.

In today’s video Amir is very obviously cheating by breathing through his nose, so Jake pinches his nose shut and Amir says: What the hell was that?
And Jake says: You were clearly cheating.
And Amir says: You’re a fucking nark!

question time

We filmed today’s question time in a city in New Zealand called Kirikiriroa or Hamilton.
We asked people in the street: What do you like about Hamilton?

I’m studying here, so it’s a really good place to do that. I’m studying to be a nurse, so Waikato hospital’s really good. And family and everything’s here, so just enjoy being with them really.

Um, there’s quite a bit to do, lots of shops and activities for families and …

I just like being near rural areas in Hamilton. I like the fact that it’s … you can go to Cambridge and smaller towns. I also like being near the river.

I’ve just grown up here, so it’s easy to stay here, it’s all familiar.

Ah, it’s flat. It’s easy to cycle round, and the river, I love the river. It’s ah, it’s a cool place to go walking.

The greenery, love it. And the people, there’s a good community spirit in Hamilton. Really, really, enjoyed the 20-odd years I’ve been here.

I like the fact that it’s sort of near, well, it sort of provides a lot of the outlying areas a sort of closer base, like for university, that type of thing. Um, yeah, servicing the sort of smaller towns.

Jake God, that’s worse than before, cut.

Amir Urgh!

Jake What are you doing?

Amir We can always edit that part out.

Jake Why edit? Why cheat? Why are you trying to cheat?

Amir Because I’m trying to make it impressive. I want to get in the book.

Jake OK, let’s just do one honest attempt. OK? No cheating.

Amir Alright, no cheating.

Well, I need a witness.

OK, ah, I’m Amir Blumenfeld and this is my certified emergency medical assistant.
Not certified.
That’s fine. Jake Hurwitz. Ah, and I’m going to be trying to break the world record for the longest time holding your breath.
I’m not certified.
Ah, OK, ah, this is a verbal agreement because we both understand the inherent risk involved this stunt, and we both agree to pay 2500 dollars to the Guinness Book of World Records if this video is fraudulent. I agree, do you agree? Just say yes.
I obviously don’t agree.
Well, what the f-!
