#1244 Questions By Tama Waipara, UK Best Place To Die, The Insatiable Moon

Show 1244 Friday 16 July
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a song by Tama Waipara. He’s a musician and actor from New Zealand.
I saw him in a play recently here in Auckland, which was fantastic and he was great. You can’t see that, even if you are in New Zealand because – as far as I know - it has finished, but you can go to his MySpace page and listen to his music.

The song I recommend to study is called Questions. I like the song and for studying English it’s a very good one to sing along to and remember the lyrics to, because the first half is basically a list of questions that you could ask someone about a party or an event that you’re going to.

Here are some of the questions:

Will I need an invitation?
Do you know who the party will be for?
Do you know if my name is on the door?
Should I bring some flowers?
Or a bottle and a tune?
Do you know what it costs to get in?

STICK NEWS

The Economist Intelligence Unit is a research and advisory company.
The company says the best place to die is the United Kingdom.

And that was Stick News for Friday the 16th of July.
Kia ora.

The top countries congratulate themselves, the bottom countries complain... and we get richer!
Nice one! Let's make another list!

Bloody hell it's raining again.
Well if we lived somewhere else, maybe we'd have more reason to live.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is insatiable.

The New Zealand International Film Festival is on right now in Auckland - this is the program - and one of the films that looks really interesting is called The Insatiable Moon.

Insatiable means impossible to satisfy.
For example you can have an insatiable appetite, curiosity, thirst, demand.

I haven’t seen the film yet, well I guess no one has because the world premier is tomorrow night, so I don’t know what an insatiable moon is.

friday joke

How do you want to die?
I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather …

... not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.

conversations with sarah
#794 Does it snow?

Step 1: Repeat Mamoru’s lines.
Step 2: Read Mamoru’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Mamoru It’s winter in New Zealand at the moment, isn’t it?

Sarah Yep. Unfortunately. I’m so over it.

Mamoru Is it very cold?

Sarah It’s not really that cold in Auckland … but it’s cold enough.

Mamoru Does it snow?

Sarah No, it never snows in Auckland. We have frosts though. I’ll just check the temperature for yesterday. Here we go … we had a high of 14 and a low of three.

Mamoru Three degrees is pretty cold.

Sarah Yeah, my hands are pretty cold when I try and type in the mornings.

Mamoru Don’t you have a heater?

Sarah Yeah, I turn the heater on. But the walls are made of, like, paper, so the heat just flies away anyway.

Tama Waipara - Questions - LYRICS

Listen to the song here.

Are we going to the same location?
Should I ask if I can bring a friend?
And will there be water?
And will there be singing?
Will I need an invitation?
Do you know who the party will be for?
Do you know if my name is on the door?
Should I bring some flowers?
Or a bottle and a tune?
Do you know what it costs to get in?

I have for you a question. (repeats)
Maybe you could give me answers.

Have you got what it takes to move a crowd?
Do you mind if your thoughts are read out loud?
Can you feed the hungry?
Can you handle pain?
When you go will you still come home again?

I have for you a question. (repeats)
Maybe you could give me answers

Will you rob from the rich to give to the poor?
Is there money in the bank when you need more?
Can you put … (?) if I should I fall?
And will you catch me if I fall?
