Show 661 Tuesday 4 March

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV or Crackle

Hi I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

You’ve probably all seen E.T. It’s a very famous movie. It’s a science fiction movie. It came out in 1982, when I was 4. I remember being quite scared the first time I saw it – when all those scientists came in, in their white suits.

One of the interesting parts of the movie, from a language perspective, is how E.T. learns English.

He learns English by watching Sesame Street which is an American educational children's television series and is a pioneer of the contemporary educational television standard, combining both education and entertainment.

You’ve probably heard of Sesame Street too because apparently it’s been on TV in more than 120 countries, and more than 30 international versions have been produced, not including dubbed versions.

E.T. is a good student. He watches the programs closely and he repeats the words and he makes good progress – from the start when he knows nothing at all and he just repeats what the girl says: B. B good. Then he progresses to sentences which aren’t grammatically correct but convey meaning, like: E.T. phone home. And then at the end, he says, in perfect English: I’ll be right here.

So why don’t you try watching E.T. again, and take note of how he learns English and see if there’s anything you can learn from him.
