Show 660 Monday 3 March

Watch today’s show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi I’m Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today’s news is about a woman who wrote a book about surviving the Holocaust.

I’m sure you know what the Holocaust is – but you might not have talked about it in English before.

This is the start of the Wikipedia entry:

The Holocaust is the term generally used to describe the killing of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, as part of a program of deliberate extermination planned and executed by the National Socialist (Nazi) regime in Germany led by Adolf Hitler.

So there are a few words that you might not know there. And if you’re going to talk about the Holocaust I think you also need to know these words: persecute and genocide.

persecute v. to treat sb in a cruel and unfair way, especially because of their race, religion or political beliefs

genocide n. the murder of a whole race or group of people

STICK NEWS

Kia Ora, in Stick News today, a woman who wrote a best-selling “memoir” has admitted the book was a hoax.

Monique was born in Belgium in 1937.
Sixty years later, she was living in the United States and she decided to publish a book.
The book was supposedly the true story of her life.
In the book, she says she is Jewish and that her parents were taken away from her during the Holocaust.
She says she walked through Europe looking for her parents. She survived by stealing food and also spent time living with wolves.
The book was translated into 18 languages and made into a feature film in France.
She has now admitted she made the story up.

And that was Stick News for Monday 3rd March.
