Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today we’re studying a song called: Way Down in the Hole. The song is by Tom Waits and was released on one of his albums in 1987.
And it’s also the theme song for an American TV show which I’ve been watching recently called The Wire.
If you read the lyrics, it sounds like it’s a religious song promoting Christianity.
If you walk with Jesus
He's gonna save your soul
You gotta keep the devil
Way down in the hole
But I’m not sure if Tom Waits is religious or not. I skimmed his Wikipedia entry and it didn’t say anything about religion. And I also tried searching online and I found people discussing the question, but no answers.
And I found these comments on songmeanings.net.
I sense some sarcasm in his voice.
And: I do assume that Tom Waits is being ironic here.
What do you think? Does Tom Waits love Jesus? Or is he being sarcastic?
STICK NEWS
Kia ora in Stick News today the number for a phone sex line was accidentally printed on a breakfast cereal box.
Chad Ochocinco is an American football player who has his own cereal.
The cereal promotes a charity called Feed the Children.
The cereal box was supposed to have the number for the charity printed on it, but the number for a phone sex line was accidentally printed instead.
And that was Stick News for Friday the 1st of October.
Kia ora .
We’d better pretend it’s not all about you.
Good thinking.
Mummy, the lady said she is a nasty girl …
I’ll do anything you want
Word of the Day
Today’s word is heed .
Heed is a noun which means careful attention and it’s usually used in the phrase pay heed or take heed.
This is from today’s song:
Don't pay heed to temptation
For his hands are so cold
You gotta help me keep the devil
Way down in the hole
I guess this means that the devil tries to tempt us to be evil but we shouldn’t pay heed to the temptation. We should ignore it.
friday joke

Way Down In The Hole by Tom Waits - LYRICS
When you walk through the garden
You gotta watch your back
Well I beg your pardon
Walk the straight and narrow track
If you walk with Jesus
He's gonna save your soul
You gotta keep the devil
Way down in the hole
He's got the fire and the fury
At his command
Well you don't have to worry
If you hold on to Jesus’ hand
We'll all be safe from Satan
When the thunder rolls
We just gotta help me keep the devil
Way down in the hole
All the angels sing about Jesus' mighty sword
And they'll shield you with their wings
And keep you close to the lord
Don't pay heed to temptation
For his hands are so cold
You gotta help me keep the devil
Way down in the hole
Down in the hole
Down in the hole
Down in the hole
Down in the hole
Down in the hole
Down in the hole
You gotta help me keep the devil
Down in the hole
