#1311 Only Son, Far Out, Pounce, Children’s Pocket Money Falls To 7-Year Low, Shy

Show 1311 Tuesday 21 September
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show. Today’s movie is called Only Son.

This is a New Zealand short film that just won the Best Short Film award at the film and television awards.

It’s kind of a ghost story. It’s about a guy who’s seeing a girl and he’s haunted by the ghost of his dead father.

The guy used to work with his father and his workmates think that his father was really cool and one of them says:

Hey, you remember that time that he did a hundred press ups in his lunch break. Far out, that was cool.

Far out is an informal expression that you can use when you think that something’s cool. And you can also use it to express surprise, for example:

He got fired for being 5 minutes late for work? Far out, that’s harsh.

So the ghost father is quite annoying … and he interrupts at awkward moments, like at the end of a date, he says to his son:

Kiss her on the mouth. Pounce.

Pounce means: to move suddenly forwards in order to attack or catch sb/sth.

Animals like lions pounce. But you don’t usually pounce when you’re going to kiss somebody.

STICK NEWS

Reuters reported that in 2009 parents in the UK gave their children an average of 6.24 pounds a week for pocket money.
This year that amount fell to 5.89 pounds, the lowest in seven years.
The article also said that children’s pocket money had fallen despite a small rise in their parents’ wages over the past year.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 21st of September.
Kia ora.

It’s not fair! Jane gets ten pounds!
sigh …

So much for the recession being over…
They reckon the recovery could be derailed by public sector job cuts.

Daddy, today I read an interesting article in the paper…

Word of the Day

Today’s word is shy.

You probably know that shy means: nervous or embarrassed about meeting and speaking to other people.

But did you know that shy also means: lacking the amount that is needed?

One of the examples here is: We are still two players shy (of a full team).

In today’s film, the guy tries to do 100 press ups, like his father did, but he gives up after 25 and his workmate says: Nah, heaps shy. 75 shy.

Only Son - Transcript

Ask her if she wants a drink.
Would you like a drink?
Sure.
Oh, hang on.
Thanks.
I told you women like shandies. It’s cause they can’t taste the alcohol. Ask her if she loves it.
Do you love it?
What?

This is our third date. They’ve all pretty much gone this badly. Dad has a theory about women.

Let them know you’re keen early on. Then never let up. Always smile and touch them as much as possible in public. But never on their tits. They hate their tits being touched in public.

He worries about me finding a girl, because I’m his only son.

Dad adopted me when I was five. Right out from the start, he never let me out of his sight. He even got me a job with him at his work. But last year, he died in a work accident.

He’s still with me, wherever I go. I know he’s just trying to help.

Being dead is awesome, I’m not even puffed.
Put all your weight on your front foot.
If you’re going to wash your dick in the sink, at least use some soap.

It’s good to have him ‘round. But it does make some things difficult.

Well, thanks for that.
Kiss her on the mouth. Pounce. Pounce.
Bye. I guess I’ll see you later then.
OK.
Bye.
You should have kissed her on the mouth. Home for a wank?
No.

Everyone at work really got on with Dad. He was really one of the boys.

Man, I miss your father. He was like a father to me.
Yeah, he was pretty cool.
Pretty cool? He was heaps cooler than you man. Hey, you remember that time he did a hundred press ups in his lunch break? Far out, that was cool.

24 … 25 …
Nah, heaps shy. 75 shy.

Did you take an afghan from the snack box without paying for it?
No.
Well someone fuckin’ did.
That’s it! You’re all fuckin’ banned! No snacks for anyone!

I’ve just always found it really difficult being myself around women.
But, ah, I’ve been to the Gold Coast.
That was an awesome trip.
Yeah.
Oh, excuse me, um, do you have any Gold Coast wines?
No.

(Spanish)

What about that, ah, massive toy I got you. It wasn’t too much, was it?
No, not at all. It’s … I really like it.

Oh, hang on. Oh …
It’s OK, you can keep it.
Oh cool. Oh thank you. Well that was, ah, that was fun, eh.
Yeah. Um, Sydney, we need to talk.
Right, Yeah, OK, that’s cool. I’ll just, I’ll just go though.

You knew she was going to dump the shit out of you.
Yeah, I know.
She was way out of your league. Try dropping down a race – somebody new to the country.
Dad, you can’t keep saying stuff like hat. Racism was OK like five years ago, but it’s not cool now. OK, just leave me alone.

I’m out. Andrea, I quit.
OK, Sydney.

What the hell … ?

I want that one.
That jacket is 1700.
I’ll take it.

For a woolly jacket? You could get a car for that.

I’ll take it.
Good man.
You fucking idiot.
Ah, is the tracksuit for sale?

Hey, I got a bike.
And a jacket too, I see.
Yeah, yeah, it’s made out of two animals. Ah, sheep and cow. Ah, do you want a ride?
It looks pretty dangerous.
Oh, you’ll be alright. You can wear the jacket.

Wow, that was exciting.
Eight bucks for garlic pizza bread?
That jacket looks really good on you. Is it warm?
Yep. You can tell it’s real wool.
Oh, yeah, well it’s sheep’s wool. It’s one of the top five wools.

Sorry I was just checking out the ladies toilets. Those little rubbish bin things stink.
