#1296 Zach From Kenya, Zach’s Fundraising Campaign, Vuvuzela Ban

Show 1296 Monday 6 September
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we have a guest from Kenya called Zach.

Mike from Real English met Zach online earlier this year and Zach wants to go and study in the United States. He’s deaf and he wants to go and study at a university called Gallaudet University which is in Washington, D.C.

Wikipedia says Gallaudet University is “the world's only university in which all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students”.

Zach has already been accepted to Gallaudet University and now he just needs to raise the money to be able to go. And so Mike decided to organize a fundraiser to help him.

You can find out more about the fundraiser here: zachs-fundraiser.blogspot.com

And to help the fundraiser, Zach managed to find some people to help him make a video. A guy called Peter did the filming and a woman called Alice interviewed him and did the interpreting in the video. They did the interview in several different places which is great because we get to see a bit of the area where he lives.

We are happy to meet you. But we have (a) few questions to ask you.
Now, first question: What is your name?
OK. He says his name is Zachariah Ngechu Gitonga.

STICK NEWS

A vuvuzela is a musical instrument which is used at soccer matches in South Africa.
They’ve just been banned from stadiums in UEFA competitions.
European football's governing body said that vuvuzelas would completely change the atmosphere, drowning supporter emotions and detracting from the experience of the game.

And that was Stick News for Monday the 6th of September.
Kia ora.

BUZZZZZ
GRRR…
WOO HOO!

Sorry, no vuvuzelas.
But I have a ticket …

I thought you were going to the game.
They wouldn’t let me in.

conversations with sarah
#830 Were you born deaf?

Step 1: Repeat Sarah’s lines.
Step 2: Read Sarah’s lines and talk to Zach.

Sarah Where do you live?

Zach I live in Karagita. We say Karagita in sign language like this, because there are so many birds in this area.

Sarah Were you born deaf?

Zach No, I wasn't. I could hear until I was seven. When I was seven, I became deaf after getting sick. Then I stopped going to a hearing school and started going to a deaf school.

Sarah After you finish studying in America, do you plan to stay there or come back to Kenya?

Zach If I'm able to go to America after I finish my degree, I'd like to return to Kenya
and help other deaf people learn English. I'd like to help deaf people. I'd like to open my own school where I can employ teachers who can teach English to the deaf.

Sarah What is the biggest challenge you face being deaf?

Zach There are many challenges. Sometimes my family doesn't tell me the whole story
about what's going on because I'm deaf. For example, sometimes when I want something,
people say there is none, just because I'm deaf.

Sarah When you get married, do you want to marry a deaf person or a hearing person?

Zach After I finish studying in America and come back to Kenya I'd like to find a girl and get married. It doesn't matter if she's a deaf or a hearing person, as long as we love each other.

Sarah Do you have a nickname?

Zach I don't have a nickname of a word but I have a nickname in sign language. I have this black spot here by my eye So when people point to this place on their face all the deaf understand they are talking about me.
