Show 1292 Thursday 2 September
Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today’s video is called Voice Talkers. Thank you very much to the person who suggested it on Twitter.
This is a funny video about a family of voice-over artists.
The story starts in a studio, where a guy is doing a voice-over for a commercial. And then he goes home and tells his family that he’s quitting his job and moving out.
But instead of talking normally at home, the whole family speaks in the style that you’d see in a TV ad. And not just the sound of their voices - the rhythm and tone - but also the content of the dialogue. The lines sound like they’re from a TV commercial or a movie voice-over rather than a normal family talking at home.
For example, when the father and son are arguing, the mother looks at the camera and says: Having trouble communicating? It may be time to try the new 14-step system that is sweeping the nation.
To sweep, in this context, means to spread quickly. So, sweeping in the nation, means that this new system is becoming very becoming popular, very quickly, all over the country.
Here are a few headlines that came up when I searched the phrase sweeping the nation.
STICK NEWS
Kia ora in Stick News today a Japanese man was arrested after he followed his girlfriend’s orders to walk down the street naked.
A 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman have been living together for more than a year in Yokohama.
Last month the woman got angry when the man failed to pay his share of the rent.
To punish her boyfriend, she ordered him to take off his clothes and follow her down the street while she rode her bicycle.
Someone called the police and the man was arrested.
A police spokesperson said the couple admitted they did something stupid and they regretted it.
And that was Stick News for Thursday 2nd September.
Kia ora.
More beer?
Thank you darling!
Look at my new iPad!
WHAT ABOUT THE RENT?!
hiss!
NOW PUT YOUR CLOTHES IN THE BASKET!
OK
ROFL!
tee hee!
Put some clothes on!
OK
How about a private spanking instead next time?
Sure.
Word of the Day
Today’s word is indubitably.
In today’s video, the guy’s doing a voice-over for an ad for some kind of junk food and the line at the end is: Mmm mmm, now that’s a man’s meal, indubitably.
And the guys that are recording the sound don’t like the way he says indubitably, so he says it again and again in slightly different ways to try and satisfy them.
Indubitably or, I think in New Zealand it should be pronounced indubitably… is a formal adverb which means: In a way that cannot be doubted; without question. And it’s a synonym of undoubtedly.
I have never heard this word before in my entire life, so I don’t think it’s very common.
Or maybe it is and I’ve just been living under a rock.
Anyway, I did a search for it and I found an old American cereal ad where kids say indubitably several times, so maybe this word’s popular in the United States – or maybe they just used it for this ad.
Question Time
We recorded today’s Question Time on a new motorway in Auckland. Before they opened the road to the public, they let people walk on it for a couple of hours last Saturday.
And we asked people: What are your impressions of the new motorway?
I think it’s great. It’ll help us get to the airport way quicker than what it is currently. And I think it’s better for Auckland.
It’s fantastic. It’s nice and smooth. Nicely painted.
Have you ever walked on a motorway before?
No.
First time.
So what did you do on the motorway?
I did a press up, a burpee, a star jump and …
Cartwheel?
A cartwheel.
And threw your ball.
And threw my ball.
It’s great, handy for the south people. You can go through the motorway, you know. Been looking … for a long time … and it’s just getting started. It’s great.
I think it’s absolutely brilliant because I just live at the end of Puhinui Road here and I’m really looking forward to using it. I think it’s a big asset. And it’ll save going through 12 or 13 sets of traffic lights to get to Hamilton. Absolutely brilliant.
Magnificent. I think it will make a hell of a difference for our travelling ourselves, my and my wife because we end up going over the Mangere bridge. And from Papakura, it’s so easy now instead of having to get off at Manukau and Wiri Station Road and then on to Roscommon road, all the places like that. Real good. Bonus. Bonus for us.
I think it’s fabulous. It’s neat.
I really like it and I think all, like, the cars will, like, get through faster, like, instead of traffic lights and stuff.
It’s going to be good. It’ll save time, going around and try to get to the other side of the motorway.
conversations with sarah
#828 Some of them are healthy
Step 1: Repeat Angie’s lines.
Step 2: Read Angie’s lines and talk to Sarah.
Angie What kind of cereal did you eat when you were a kid?
Sarah We didn’t usually eat cereal.
Angie Why not?
Sarah Mostly because it’s too expensive I think. I really wanted to eat chocolate cereal … but, alas, I wasn’t allowed to put it in the trolley.
Angie Yeah, it is expensive.
Sarah Yeah, and also it’s not very healthy. That was probably another reason.
Angie Some of them are healthy.
Sarah Yeah, I guess some of them are, but most of them are more like the stuff you should eat for desert, not breakfast.
Voice Talkers - TRANSCRIPT
Then wash it down with a gallon guzzler of Mount Swish Mint Freezy. Mmm mmm, now that’s a man’s meal.
Um, Grover. Can we take that part again, from the top?
And don’t forget to order Squiggly Zesty Cajun Shake 'ems with our signature BBQ Bonanza sauce. Then wash it down with a gallon guzzler of Mount Swish Mint Freezy.
Mmm mmm, now that’s a man’s meal. Indubitably.
I’m not buying the Indubitably.
Indubitably. No.
Indubitably. No.
Indubitably.
Should have had his dad do it.
Well, you get what you pay for.
Grover Bradshaw had it all, until one day, he decided to throw it all away.
I’m not throwing anything away. It’s not my thing Dad, it never was.
One man, on the verge of making the biggest mistake of his life …
Stop it. Stop doing that.
Grover, just hear me out.
There’s nothing left to talk about.
Having trouble communicating? It may be time to try the new 14 step system that is sweeping the nation.
Don’t start with me Carol.
Mom, what are they talking about?
Nothing David, now finish your Crusty Bites, they’re good for you.
And they’ve got the big breakfast taste that kids love!
Already Dad? He’s 10 years old.
Hey, you’re never too young to have a dream, Grover.
This is your dream, dad, you don’t let anyone live their own life, and I for one am sick of it.
I used to get so sick of my daily grind, until I found the revolutionary method of …
Carol, no. Look, I’m leaving. I’m going to be a professional orthodontist. That’s right everyone, my future’s all about malocclusions and retainers and corrective head gear. I’m tired of just talking about people that do something with their lives. I’m going to change the world, Dad, and you can’t stop me.
Dad, what are you looking at?
One man venturing into the unknown leaving behind a world that didn’t understand him, his fate is his own, at last he has found his voice.
Stop it.
Side effects of living the dream may include leaving your family, delusions of grandeur, severe failure, and in rare cases, some dying. Ask your doctor if living the dream is right for you.
Brought to you by Crusty Bites.
They’ve got the big breakfast taste that kids love.
