Show 1207 Thursday 25 March
Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
The video we’re studying today is a short clip of Joe Biden, the vice president of the United States of America.
The other day Barack Obama signed a new law about health care in the US. I’m not too sure what it’s about, but it seems to be a big deal – or, according to Joe Biden, a big fucking deal.
At the signing ceremony for this new law, Biden spoke just before Barack Obama was about to speak and he said: Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama.
And then everyone started clapping and Biden and Obama shook hands and patted each other on the back and Biden said to Obama: This is a big fucking deal.
If something is a big deal it means it’s special or important. And the word fucking adds emphasis – but a lot of people would consider that it’s not an appropriate word to use in this situation, which is why a lot of people have watched and commented on the videos on the internet.
STICK NEWS
Kia ora, in Stick News today a security worker in London is in trouble for ogling a colleague using a full-body scanner.
According to Reuters, a 29-year-old airport security worker accidently walked through a full-body scanner.
Her 25-year-old male coworker then made lewd comments.
The woman said she was traumatized and complained to her bosses and the police.
And that was Stick News for Thursday the 25th of March.
Kia ora.
BEEEEEEP!
Opps!
BEEEEEEP!
Nice tits!
You're supposed to be ogling the passengers, not your co-workers!
Sorry.
Word of the Day
Today’s word is f-bomb.
Some of the videos and stories about Joe Biden’s recent comment have titles like: Biden Drops F-Bomb.
What’s an f-bomb?
This is what Urban Dictionary says: Saying fuck when you probably shouldn't.
conversations with sarah
#769 Are you shocked?
Step 1: Read Beth’s lines.
Step 2: Repeat Beth’s lines and talk to Sarah.
Beth Are you shocked he dropped the f-bomb?
Sarah I don’t know about shocked, but I don’t think it was a good idea.
Beth Doesn’t everyone use language like that anyway?
Sarah Not everyone. Lots of people really hate the f-word. And I think it’s good to have different language for different situations.
Beth You mean, you shouldn’t swear in public?
Sarah Mmm. It depends on the situation. But yeah, I think using formal language is one way of showing your respect for a certain situation or for a certain position.
Beth So it’s disrespectful to use informal language?
Sarah No, not always. It depends.
