Show 1201 Friday 19 March
Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.
Today we’re studying a song called Why by Avril Lavigne.
This was a suggestion from Erica, so thank you for the suggestion.
This was a suggestion from Erica, so thank you for the suggestion.
This song is about someone who is having relationship troubles. And in the song she asks her boyfriend lots of questions. So it’s a good song for studying questions.
For example:
Why do you always do this to me?
And: How come you act like this, like you just don’t care at all?
How come means the same thing as why, it’s just more informal. And the sentences are formed different ways .
For example you can say: Why did you decide to move?
Or: How come you decided to move?
Why don’t you have a cellphone ?
How come you don’t have a cellphone ?
Most of the questions in the song seem to be rhetorical questions – that is, she says them to produce an effect rather than to get an answer.
For example, these questions:
Do you expect me to believe I was the only one to fall?
Do you expect me to believe I'm gonna let us fall apart?
I think they’re the kind of rhetorical questions that you’re likely to hear in conversations or arguments between couples. Especially a question like: Why do you always do this to me?
STICK NEWS
Kia ora in Stick News today a TV network in New Zealand is planning to slash millions of dollars off the news and current affairs budget.
TVNZ is a television network in New Zealand.
Recently, their finances haven’t been looking so hot.
So they’ve decided to cut 5 million dollars off the news and current affairs budget.
And that was Stick News for Friday the 19th of March.
Kia ora .
And we'll be back with more trashy "news" stories after these five billion ads...
As you can see...
$ OUT
$ IN
We've fired all the journalists so now you'll be reading the news straight from Twitter.
Word of the Day
Today’s word is berth .
This is a sign that I saw on the wharf when I was getting on the ferry. It says: Danger: Keep clear when boat is berthing .
A berth is a place where a ship or boat can stop and stay, usually in a harbour.
And to berth is to put a ship in a berth or keep it there.
Berth and birth have the same pronunciation, so when I saw this sign I had an image of a ship having a baby. But no, that’s not what it means.
Why couldn't the peanut butter cross the road?
Because there was a traffic jam
#765 Do what?
Step 1: Read Ethan’s lines.
Step 2: Repeat Ethan’s lines and talk to Sarah.
Sarah Why do you always do this to me?
Ethan Do what?
Sarah What you’re doing now. You’re twisting everything around to make it seem like my fault.
Ethan No, I’m not.
Sarah Yes, you are.
Ethan I’m just saying that you’re the one that suggested it.
Sarah So what? What difference does that make?!
Ethan Stop shouting!
Sarah I’m not shouting.
And that was The Daily English Show. And I just have one more thing to say today. Almost 200 shows ago we studied a song by Bob Dylan, and I thought it was about time we did another one. Last time we did It Ain’t Me Babe. So, which song do you think we should we study next? Please leave a comment and tell me which Bob Dylan song you’d like to study next.
Why - Avril Lavigne - Lyrics
Why, do you always do this to me?
Why, couldn't you just see through me?
How come, you act like this
Like you just don't care at all?
Do you expect me to believe I was the only one to fall?
I can feel, I can feel you near me, even though you're far away
I can feel, I can feel you baby, why
It's not supposed to feel this way
I need you, I need you
More and more each day
It's not supposed to hurt this way
I need you, I need you, I need you
Tell me, are you and me still together?
Tell me, do you think we could last forever?
Tell me, why
Hey, listen to what we're not saying
Let's play, a different game than what we're playing
Try, to look at me and really see my heart
Do you expect me to believe I'm gonna let us fall apart?
I can feel, I can feel you near me, even when you're far away
I can feel, I can feel you baby, why
It's not supposed to feel this way
I need you, I need you
More and more each day
It's not supposed to hurt this way
I need you, I need you, I need you
Tell me, are you and me still together?
Tell me, you think we could last forever?
Tell me, why
So go and think about whatever you need to think about
Go on and dream about whatever you need to dream about
And come back to me when you know just how you feel, you feel
I can feel, I can feel you near me, even though you're far away
I can feel, I can feel you baby, why
It's not supposed to hurt this way
I need you, I need you
More and more each day
It's not supposed to hurt this way
I need you, I need you, I need you
Tell me
It's not supposed to hurt this way
I need you, I need you
More and more each day
It's not supposed to hurt this way
I need you, I need you, I need you
Tell me, are you and me still together?
Tell me, do you think we could last forever?
Tell me, why
WOD start
