#1213 Quotation Marks, Easter Word Game, There's Nothing Like Australia, Nerd, Dork, Dweeb, Geek

Show 1213 Wednesday 31 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

I saw this sign outside a shop in Auckland the other day.

What’s wrong with this sign?

Yes, the quotation marks, also known as inverted commas or speech marks.

Quotation marks have many uses, but they are not used for emphasis, which is what the person who made this sign appears to be trying to use them for.

If you want to emphasize a word, you can underline it, or put it in italics, or bold – or all of the above … but do not use inverted commas.

Today’s site is one for Easter.

It’s called Squigly’s Word Star.
It’s a variation on hangman. You try and guess a word before the stars run out.

STICK NEWS

The last time Tourism Australia tried to encourage people to come to Australia, they said: “Where the bloody hell are you?
This time they’ve come up with a new line to promote the country: “There’s nothing like Australia.”

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 31st of March.
Kia ora.

My word, look at that language! Let's cancel those tickets... it seems like a MOST unsavoury country!

Hmm... does that mean it's good or bad?

Word of the Day

Today’s word is dweeb.

According to my dictionary, a dweeb is: a boring, studious, or socially inept person.

Recently I saw a diagram which tried to explain the difference between a nerd, a geek, a dweeb, and a dork.

Diagram thanks to: matthewwmason.wordpress.com

Those words all have similar meanings. And I think the difference in meaning between the words is really a matter of opinion and depends a lot on the user.

So it could be a good question to ask someone over a cup of coffee or a few beers: What’s the difference between a nerd, a geek, a dweeb, and a dork?

conversations with sarah
#773 Were you a geek?

Step 1: Read Leo’s lines.
Step 2: Repeat Leo’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Leo What’s the difference between a nerd, a dork, a geek, and a dweeb?

Sarah I think it just depends on who’s using the word and what they want it to mean.

Leo How do you use them?

Sarah Well … nerd, dork … yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever really used nerd, or dork, or dweeb. But when I was at high school we used to use the word geek quite a lot.

Leo What did it mean?

Sarah I would say I thought a person was a geek if I thought their clothes were unfashionable or uncool and they were … socially inept.

Leo Were you a geek?

Sarah Um, well I didn’t think of myself as a geek. But I guess other people might have … I don’t know. Hmmm.

Leo Were you socially inept?

Sarah Hmm … maybe sometimes. I was quite shy and very self-conscious in some situations. But … I don’t think I was a complete failure.

#1212 Bitch, Pimpin' - Demi Moore Vs Kim Kardashian, Good Friday

Show 1212 Tuesday 30 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a short film called Bitch.

I think this is quite a clever idea for a film.

A man goes into a supermarket to buy one item and as he goes to pay for it, he goes to the checkout and the woman in front of him starts to talk to him.
She tells him that he looks just like her son. But then she pulls out a photo and shows him and they clearly look nothing alike. So he thinks she’s just a bit of a crazy old lady and he smiles.

And then she asks him a favour.

She says: I know it’s a big favour to ask, but could you please, as I go out of there, please shout (out), “Bye-bye mum.” And I go say, “Bye-bye son.” You could do that for me?

I’m not sure where she’s from, but she’s obviously speaking a dialect of English or English isn’t her first language. But I go say bye-bye son obviously means I will say bye-bye son.

So as she’s leaving the checkout she wants the guy to call out to her bye-bye mum. And the guy agrees. He says: I can do that for you.

And then what happens? Well you’re going to have to go and watch the short film to find out.

STICK NEWS

Demi Moore is an American actress who loves tweeting.
Demi Moore spat the dummy.
According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary a pimp is a man who controls prostitutes and arranges clients for them, taking a percentage of their earnings in return.
Urban Dictionary says the word pimpin’ is also used to describe something that’s cool.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 30th of March.
Kia ora.

Lots of tweeps love the butt photo you took, darling!
You do have an awesome ass, honey!

Wow...I look so hot in this picture!

Yes please!
He he he...$5 for her $295 for me...what a great business!

LOL! Poor old lady don't understand modern English.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is Good Friday.

In New Zealand – and in other countries too - Good Friday is a public holiday which is part of Easter.

In Wikipedia it says that this holiday is also called: Holy Friday, Black Friday, or Great Friday.

And the thing that I like about Good Friday … is that it’s the day you’re supposed to eat hot cross buns.

This is a hot cross bun. It’s a sweet and spicy bun with raisins in it and a cross on top.
The cross symbolizes the crucifixion.

A crucifixion, in case you didn’t know, is: an ancient method of painful execution in which the condemned person is tied or nailed to a large wooden cross and left to hang until dead.

Very brutal.

So, as I said, you’re supposed to eat hot cross buns on Good Friday, but shops start selling them and people start eating them a few weeks earlier. I bought some the other day and as you can see here, it says best before the 30th of March, which is three days before Good Friday.

#1211 TDES News, Odd Book Title, Visiting A NZ TV Show, Hyper-

Show 1211 Monday 29 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

I have a few updates today.

Firstly, I’d just like to say thank you to the people who joined in the live broadcast. We did two q and a sessions on Ustream. And I enjoyed it. It was good to get a bit of feedback from people and get some new ideas too.

We’re now thinking about doing it regularly some time in the future. And we might try out some different sites too.

The next piece of news is, we’re about to have another break. With Easter coming up, we thought it was about time we had a bit of a break. And this isn’t the last show before the break, there’s still a few more shows.

We’ve decided to take a month off from making the show to have a bit of a holiday – but mostly to work on the business side of things.

We’re looking for new sponsors and other forms of funding and it’s hard to work on that and produce the show at the same time. So we’ll take a month off and hopefully everything will go brilliantly well and we’ll be able to come back and just focus on making the show which is what I enjoy the most.

And when we come back after the break we have something exciting to introduce. That is our new couch! We found it the other day on an auction site … and it’s not yellow, unfortunately, but it was the right size and shape, and we could always find some kind of yellow sheet or some cover of some sort to put over it.

And speaking of our ever-changing set and studio … if you’re ever in Hakodate in Hokkaido, in Japan, or if you’re there now, please go and visit Dekoboko Bar and you’ll be able to see the picture that used to be used at the start of The Daily English Show. It’s hanging on the wall there, so it’s very cool that a piece of The Daily English Show history lives on in Hokkaido. If you go there please take a photo and send it to me or send me the link.

Penny What kind of show was it?

Sarah It was a media commentary show. There’s a host and three guests and they just talk about some media issues. And there was another show being filmed after that which was about ads, and so we stayed for that one too. It was fun.

#1210 Hot Cross Buns

Show 1210 Sunday 28 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Sunday Kitchen #160 Hot Cross Buns

I thought I’d try making some hot cross buns … but I couldn’t really be bothered so I bought some from the supermarket instead.

Hot cross buns are supposed to have raisins in them … but these ones didn’t for some reason. I guess they’re for the people who don’t like raisins.

I wanted to heat them up in the toaster because I think it uses less power than the oven. But they didn’t fit, unfortunately.

Sadly, I left the buns in the oven too long and I burnt them. Oops. And my second attempt wasn’t much better.

But third time lucky, I managed to finally heat up a hot cross bun without burning it.
It tasted OK I guess, but it just wasn’t the same without the raisins.

#1209 Dane Rumbe - Sky Tower Concert, Auckland New Zealand

Show 1209 Saturday 27 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

I heard there was going to be a free concert by the Sky Tower, so we went down to check it out.

I think it was organized by a radio station called ZM and there were a couple of guys walking around taking photos of people in a frame which said ZM Listeners Are Better Looking.

And someone from the station gave out some free tickets to an event.

A guy called Dane Rumble was performing. He arrived on stage by jumping from the Sky Tower which was pretty cool.

Dane Rumble reminded me a bit of Vanilla Ice, except he wasn’t rapping.

We listened for a while and then went up the tower where we had a bird’s-eye view of the concert.

#1208 Masters Of War - Bob Dylan, Former NZ Immigration Boss Busted, Deceive, Pirate Joke

Show 1208 Friday 26 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Thank you to everyone who suggested Bob Dylan songs to study. It was hard to choose because they were all very good suggestions.

Bob Dylan has many interesting songs to study, so I definitely recommend him.

Today we’re looking at Masters of War, which is a song that came out in 1963.

* suggested by SOuso

Apparently it’s an adaption of an old English folk song. So Bob Dylan used the same melody and wrote new lyrics.

This song really reflects how I feel about war. For example how it’s horribly unfair that it’s the rich men sitting in their comfortable offices making the decisions that everyone should go and kill each other, but they don’t actually have to do any of the killing and dying, they just hide in their comfortable offices and homes.

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people’s blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

I wondered about this line: Then you set back and watch.

I thought it should be sit, but I got these lyrics off Bob Dylan’s official site, so I thought no, it must be right.
And then I looked up set and it turns out that set is an informal word for sit.
I’d never heard that before. Bob Dylan’s from Minnesota, so maybe it’s common there.

It's VERT important to check that documents are genuine...

he he he...they'll never check...

Word of the Day

Today’s word is deceive.

deliberately mislead or misrepresent the truth to

This is from today’s song:

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive

Do you know who Judas was?
He’s a character from the bible. He was one of Jesus’ students, but he betrayed him.

According to what I learnt on Wikipedia, Judas helped some soldiers arrest Jesus, and then Jesus was killed on the cross … so it was kind of Judas’ fault I guess.

So I think Bob Dylan’s comparing the men who lie and deceive to start wars to what Judas did to Jesus.

#1207 Joe Biden's F-bomb, A Big Deal, Full-body Scanner Ogling At Heathrow Airport

Show 1207 Thursday 25 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

The video we’re studying today is a short clip of Joe Biden, the vice president of the United States of America.

The other day Barack Obama signed a new law about health care in the US. I’m not too sure what it’s about, but it seems to be a big deal – or, according to Joe Biden, a big fucking deal.

At the signing ceremony for this new law, Biden spoke just before Barack Obama was about to speak and he said: Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama.

And then everyone started clapping and Biden and Obama shook hands and patted each other on the back and Biden said to Obama: This is a big fucking deal.

If something is a big deal it means it’s special or important. And the word fucking adds emphasis – but a lot of people would consider that it’s not an appropriate word to use in this situation, which is why a lot of people have watched and commented on the videos on the internet.

STICK NEWS

According to Reuters, a 29-year-old airport security worker accidently walked through a full-body scanner.
Her 25-year-old male coworker then made lewd comments.
The woman said she was traumatized and complained to her bosses and the police.

And that was Stick News for Thursday the 25th of March.

You're supposed to be ogling the passengers, not your co-workers!

Word of the Day

Today’s word is f-bomb.

What’s an f-bomb?

Sarah I don’t know about shocked, but I don’t think it was a good idea.

Beth Doesn’t everyone use language like that anyway?

Sarah Not everyone. Lots of people really hate the f-word. And I think it’s good to have different language for different situations.

Beth You mean, you shouldn’t swear in public?

Sarah Mmm. It depends on the situation. But yeah, I think using formal language is one way of showing your respect for a certain situation or for a certain position.

Beth So it’s disrespectful to use informal language?

Sarah No, not always. It depends.

#1206 Apostrophes, Formspring, Menu Prices Like Stocks, ZOMFG, Tattoos

Show 1206 Wednesday 24 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Last weekend I went to a festival where there were lots of stalls selling … mostly stuff like food and T-shirts and there were a few selling temporary tattoos.

And one of them had a big sign saying: TEMPORARY AIRBRUSH TATTOO’S.

What’s wrong with that sign?

Yes, that’s right. It doesn’t need an apostrophe. The word has an s because it’s plural, not because it’s possessive or a contraction.

Here are some examples of sentences with the word tattoos/tattoo’s.

My tattoo’s colour is fading. (possessive)
She has three tattoos. (plural)
I think his tattoo’s cool. (contraction)

Today I recommend a site called Formspring.

This site is just about asking and answering questions – so I think it’s an excellent one for studying English.

You could sign up in a class or a group of friends and ask each other questions for English practice.

And feel free to ask me a question here.

* Ask knf a question here.

STICK NEWS

Kia ora in Stick News today a new bar in the United States will have prices which fluctuate like shares on a stock market.

The Exchange Bar and Grill is opening in Manhattan on the 1st of April.
The prices of food and drinks will flash on a ticker tape and will change according to demand.
According to Reuters, the prices will fluctuate in 25 cent increments, but will most likely plateau at a $2 change in either direction.

And that was Stick News for Wednesday the 24th of March.
Kia ora.

Hmm...April fool?

Dude, my glass is empty and it's your round...
Yeah hang on. I'm waiting for the price to drop.

We're diversifying our investments!
Uh, I wanted a beer...

Word of the Day

Today’s word is ZOMFG.

Well, not that you’re actually supposed to say it like that. It’s an abbreviation that you normally write or read.

OMG stands for oh my god. And OMFG stands for oh my fucking god.
So what does the z stand for?

Well, you usually write OMG or OMFG in capitals, but when you go to press shift, you sometimes make a mistake, so instead of writing OMFG you end up with Zomfg.

So some people write the z in there on purpose, to be funny.

This is a free magazine that gets delivered to my apartment (building). And there’s a small article in here that says: ZOMFG IT’S KELLY CLARKSON.

from: The Groove Guide

Kelly Clarkson is an American singer who’s coming to New Zealand soon and the person writing this is excited because they like her.

Sarah No, not really.

Amir Why won’t you tell me?

Sarah Well if I showed you or told you what it was you might think it’s stupid but you’d have to think of something polite to say … so I’d rather just not say.

Amir You don’t think I’d be honest?

Sarah Well, you don’t have much choice when you’re looking at someone’s tattoo. It would be pretty rude to say, “Wow, ugly tattoo. Why on earth did you get that?”

#1205 Beyond Words, Might, Google Leaves China, Witty

Show 1205 Tuesday 23 March
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi, I’m Sarah, welcome to The Daily English Show.

Today we’re studying a short film called Beyond Words.

This film has very little dialogue, so I think you’ll find that it’s quite easy to follow the film even if you can’t understand everything that they’re saying.

It’s a thriller and I think the editing’s really interesting.

One of the main characters can’t see and the other one can’t hear and the editing switches between the perspectives of those two characters.

Let’s have a look at some of the language.

Part of the film takes place at a yoga class and you can hear the voice of the teacher saying:

Hi, my name's Holly. Today we're going to run through dynamic (something) yoga class. (I can’t catch what the name of the class was.)
If anybody has any injures, can you please let me know before we start.

To run through means to perform, act or practice sth – you could replace it with do.
And let me know means tell me.

This is a line from towards the end of the film, a guy says to a girl: I think you might have dropped your keys back at the gym.

This is a good example of how to use the word might.

Might is a very common and useful word, it expresses possibility, like the word maybe.

Here are some examples:

I might go out tonight, but I haven’t decided yet. I’m not sure if I can really be bothered going.

It looks like it might rain.

She said she might come over tomorrow, so we can talk about it then.

STICK NEWS

According to Wikipedia, there are more than 30,000 internet police in China who sensor anti-government content.
In 2006, Google launched a version of their site based in China and agreed to censor the results.
Recently, they changed their mind. They decided to redirect Google China users to the uncensored site based in Hong Kong.

And that was Stick News for Tuesday the 23rd of March.
Kia ora.

Word of the Day

Today’s word is witty.

Witty basically means: clever and funny.

Witty people are clever and cool. Hang out with them.

And the reason why I chose this word today is because someone left this nice comment on YouTube recently.

Your stick news has such witty social commentary. Keep up the good work!

Thank you.

Step 1: Read the girl’s lines.
Step 2: Repeat the girl’s lines and talk to the guy.

Girl Some guy, he tried to steal my car.

Guy Are you alright?

Girl Yeah, I'm fine.

Guy I think you might have dropped your keys back at the gym. I just handed some in.

Girl Oh.

Guy Do you want me to walk you back there and we'll pick them up?

Girl Sure.
