#1169 Video Competition, Chile Coin Spelling Mistake, Winter Holiday?

Show 1169 Monday 15 February
Watch today's show at YouTube or BlipTV.

Hi I'm Sarah. Welcome to The Daily English Show.

As you may know, we made a video for a competition.

I was really happy to finally find a video competition that we could actually enter. America has a lot of video competitions but they’re usually only for people who live in America.

This competition was run by a company called Billi Tees.
They are a NZ T-shirt store, and I found them online when I was in Japan and I bought this T-shirt.

For the competition you had to make a video which included the line If it’s Kiwi, it’s good and included Billi Tees.

So we made a video trying to include as many Kiwi things as possible, what’s known as Kiwiana.

Here are some of the things that you can see in the video: hokey pokey ice cream, a Buzzy Bee, feijoa vodka, New Zealand marmite, this book, a chilly bin … And these are some ANZAC biscuits which I bought especially for the video and then forgot to take them to the park. Oops.

ANZAC stands for: Australian and New Zealand Army Corps by the way. So they’re a kind of military biscuit.

I was also planning to try and make something out of number 8 wire, which is famous in New Zealand, so I went to PlaceMakers, which is just down the road and I asked them if they sold number 8 wire. But they only sold it in some huge quantity, so I gave up on that idea.

Anyway, if you’d like to help us win this competition, then please follow the link and go and vote for us. To vote you have to click on discussion, under the video, and then, I love it.

And then you can leave a comment under the video saying that it’s the greatest video you’ve ever seen.

STICK NEWS

In 2008 thousands of coins were made in Chile with a spelling mistake.
The name of the country was spelt wrong.
Apparently, the mistake went unnoticed until a collector rang the mint at the end of last year.
Several employees, including the general manager, have been fired.

And that was Stick News for Monday the 15th of February.
Kia ora.

conversations with sarah
#741 To where?

Step 1: Read Lucy’s lines.
Step 2: Repeat Lucy’s lines and talk to Sarah.

Lucy What’s the prize?

Sarah Some air tickets.

Lucy To where?

Sarah To somewhere in New Zealand, you can choose.

Lucy Where would you go?

Sarah Well, New Zealand’s not very big … so it would a waste to go somewhere close. I thought maybe Queenstown.

Lucy Isn’t that in Australia?

Sarah No, that’s QueenslandQueenstown is at the bottom of New Zealand.

Lucy What’s down there?

Sarah They have some ski fields, so I thought maybe I could go down in winter and do a bit of snowboarding and make a video of the trip.

Lucy Cool, I’m looking forward to seeing the video!

Sarah Yeah, well, we have to win the competition first …
